Heh, what a cute little kitty... can I break its neck?
~ Mandrake taunting Olive.

Mandrake is the main antagonist of Attack on High Guardian Academy, the final episode of the first season of the animated series, High Guardian Spice. He is a minion of The Triumvirate, as well as Olive's rival, who seeks to kill the High Guardian Spice group as well as the entire High Guardian Academy both out of orders from the Triumvirate and out of bloodlust.

He was voiced by A.J. Beckles, who also voiced Poison Mushroom Cookie in Cookie Run: Kingdom.

Personality[]

In stark contrast to other characters in the show, Mandrake is a purely heartless and twisted psychopath. His first lines were him taunting Olive and threatening to break her pet cat's neck. He also demonstrates a longing to kill that surpasses any loyalty towards the Triumvirate as he went out of his way to kill as many people as possible, including the teenage students of High Guardian Academy. On that note, he is shown to be a hypocrite as he criticizes Olive for failing the Triumvirate, even though he (as stated before) cares nothing about their orders.

He is also highly intelligent and was capable of infiltrating the academy before later getting a slight upper-hand against Rosemary using the appearance of her mother. As a shapeshifter, Mandrake is skilled in deception and changing his voice, which he uses to trick many.

Biography[]

Mandrake is sent by the Triumvirate to fetch Olive while she is casually walking on a quest to succeed in permanently stopping the girls who are foiling the Triumvirate's plans, bickering with her all the while until he sees her pet cat named Kino, saying that he wants permission to snap it's neck. Olive then sends Kino to run away safely while Mandrake tells Olive that he is her boss for now on and that she will do what he asks, under a threat of execution.

Mandrake proceeds to infiltrate the academy as Lavender aka Rose's lost mother in an attempt to catch her off guard, manipulate her, and finish her right there and then with a sword, but Rosemary distracts her by mentioning Professor Caraway, so Mandrake disappears and enters Caraway's office to disguise as him. Caraway notices however and gets into battle while trying to protect Rosemary, Sage, Parsley, and Thyme. Mandrake then gets thrown out of a window and he flees while Caraway tells the girls about his shapeshifting abilities and promising to gather all the teachers to stop him and any other shapeshifters to keep the academy safe.

Unfortunately, Mandrake impersonates Caraway again and heads to the forge to kill the teachers with a special, deadly poison. Olive however, swapped the drink to merely make them go unconscious to avoid suspicion, much to Mandrake's frustrating glare. Mandrake doesn't mind this for long though, as he's got a nasty scheme in mind. Mandrake makes a announcement with Caraway's voice to the students to go to the forge for a important gathering, so the students head on over to the room. When most of the students enter, "Caraway" shuts the door and seals the lock to avoid anyone escaping. When Olive comes down to ask Mandrake what is his true goal, Mandrake simply states that he intends on murdering everyone inside the academy and make it look like an simple mishap: a spell trick going horribly awry. Olive tries convincing Mandrake that Rosemary, Sage, Parsley, and Thyme are still out there in an attempt to save everyone else, but when Olive leaves, Mandrake uses a fire spell against the door with a casual smile, the students panicking and crying inside as the smoke begins to rise up.

Mandrake then casts a dome over the school to further make sure that no one comes in or out, while Rosemary, Sage, Parsley, and Thyme enter the library to defeat Mandrake and Olive while Olive desperately tries to persuade Mandrake that maybe everyone doesn't need to die, but Mandrake refuses and steals Thyme to use as a hostage. Luckily, Olive then tricks Mandrake that she has changed her moral qualms against killing and thus grabs his sword to seemingly kill the girls only to suddenly impale Mandrake in the gut. Mandrake grunts and sets more of the academy on fire while Olive apologizes for what she has done and seeks to help them out as the students eventually manage to escape by working together and use their skills. Mandrake ends up in one long yet epic climax with the main girls + Olive but is overwhelmed and beaten down. Mandrake furiously flees while pretending to be a firefighter, only for the real Lavender to snatch him offscreen and is forced to confront the Triumvirate for his failure. Mandrake then blames everything on Olive and tries desperately convincing the Triumvirate to please spare his life and give him one last chance. When the Triumvirate asks Lavender on what shall they do with him, she then orders Mandrake to be executed before the scene fades to black.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Shapeshifting: Mandrake's main ability is that he is able to transform into any person he knows about. He appears to be very skilled with this ability and has been shown as Mr. Calloway, Olive, and Lavender.
    • Voice-Changing: When in a disguise, Mandrake is able to change his voice to match that person.
  • Magic: Mandrake is very skilled when it comes to magic, with a preference for new magic.
