| ~ The Maneater Archstone. |
The Maneaters, also known as the Mixed Demons, are supporting antagonists and a boss fight in the 2009 action role-playing dark fantasy video game Demon's Souls and its 2020 remake of the same name.
The Maneaters were a pair of powerful demons, possibly products of the Old Monk's experimentation. They resided in the tower peaks of Latria and devoured anyone who approached their territory.
Biography[]
After the Old Monk was possessed by a demonic golden robe and imprisoned the residents of his kingdom into the Tower of Latria, he conducted sinister rituals which involved sucking out the souls of the prisoners and twisting them into demons of his own creation. The Maneaters were two examples of his experimentations. Massive demonic brutes, the Old Monk used the Maneaters as his bodyguards to protect him against any escapers or demon slayers who sought his archdemon powers.
The Maneaters are the second bosses the Slayer of Demons encounters in the Tower of Latria, found in the upper section of the tower after being lifted to the top by gargoyles. Just before the final stairwell of the tower that leads to the Old Monk, the Maneaters ambush the player on a bridge. Only one Maneater is on the bridge as the battle begins, but the second will join in after a minute passes or the first Maneater's health is reduced to at least a tenth of its health bar. The Maneaters are very aggressive enemies, using their claws to slash at the player or lunge at them. They can also emit sonic waves from their mouths, dealing magic damage to anything in front of them. Their serpent tail can spew magical arrows at the player if they are further away. During the battle, the serpent can bite into the Maneater, temporarily buffing it to deal more damage. This can be prevented by staggering the Maneater from hitting it enough, or cutting the serpent tail off. If the Maneater's attacks send it to the edge of the bridge, it temporarily takes flight, shooting its sound waves or a magic arrow if the serpent tail hasn't been cut off at the player before eventually coming down.
Once the second Maneater enters the brawl, it is advised to defeat the first Maneater as soon as possible since both Maneaters can easily gang up on the player and overwhelm them. The most important tip is to watch the player's footing, as it is very easy for the Maneaters to push the player off the bridge to their death. When the Maneaters take flight, use ranged weaponry to attack them. The Maneaters have balanced defenses but are weakest against fire.
Once both Maneaters are defeated, the second drops the Mixed Demon's Soul.
Appearance[]
The Maneaters are large beasts covered in brown fur with sharp claws on their hands and feet, bat-like wings on their back, and a serpent as their tail. Their heads are humanoid with glowing green eyes. In the PlayStation 5 remake, the Maneaters are covered in wounds, presumably from other demon slayers they have slain, and have stitched faces.

Trivia[]
- The Maneaters' appearance might be based on several monsters from mythology, such as the manticore (having the head of a humanoid and the body of a lion) and the chimera (having a snake as the tail).
- The Maneaters' battle gimmick of fighting one boss before a second joins in would be later used for the Bell Gargoyles in Dark Souls.
- If equipped with a bow while standing at the fog gate, it is possible to shoot at the first Maneater without aggroing it. If the first Maneater is badly damaged or killed this way, the second Maneater will immediately enter the battle.
- The Maneaters' Mixed Demon's Soul can be consumed for 7,600 souls or be given to Blacksmith Ed to ascend a +7 dagger or thrusting sword into the Needle of Eternal Agony.
