Biography[]
Background[]
Not much is known about Manny's past, but he grew up in Mexico with his father, and the two managed to survive the Cordyceps outbreak. After the outbreak commenced, Manny joined the Fireflies and was stationed at St. Mary's hospital in Salt Lake City, where he befriended Abby Anderson, Owen Moore, Nora Harris, Mel, Jordan, Nick and Leah. When Joel Miller proceeded to kill Marlene, Dr. Jerry Anderson and half of the Fireflies, Manny and Owen arrived and discovered Jerry's corpse. Abby soon arrived and Owen comforted her, as Manny could do nothing but watch helplessly. After the Fireflies disbanded, Manny and the group traveled to Seattle, Washington, where they joined the Washington Liberation Front.
Both Manny and Abby became the W.L.F.'s most capable soldiers, as Isaac considered them his best and had them rise in the ranks with their own groups. When not going on patrols, Manny was known to sleep around with numerous women, and even once asked Abby to give him her room for the night to sleep with a W.L.F. weather broadcaster.
The Last of Us Part II[]
Manny accompanied Abby to Jackson, Wyoming to help her get revenge, and would assist her by pinning Joel down after his leg was shot. After Abby tortured and murdered Joel, Manny spat on his corpse before leaving Miller's brother and adopted daughter, Tommy and Ellie, alive by Owen's request. Returning to Seattle, Manny was one of the few in the group to have not been affected by the incident, and continued his service to the liberation front. A few weeks later, Manny was assigned to travel to the forward operating base alongside Abby and Mel, and attempted to ease the tension that had rose between the two. During their travel, they were ambushed by the Seraphites and were forced to fight against the cult and the infected.
The group were rescued by a W.L.F. patrol and reached the base, where Manny and Abby learned from Nora that Danny was dead after being shot by Owen. Meeting with Isaac in his building, Manny and Abby were given leadership over two platoons to head the assault on the Seraphites' settlement. Despite being ordered to not locate Owen, Abby disobeyed orders and Manny agreed to help her leave without being detected. When Isaac discovered this, he interrogated her friends, and Manny didn't get him any information. As a result, Alvarez was promoted as leader of both platoons to head the invasion. He was then assigned to acquire boats for the assault, but Manny's platoon were all killed by Joels' brother Tommy, who traveled to Seattle to get revenge. Meeting with Abby, Manny worked with her to reach Tommy's location, but was instead killed by Miller with a shot to the head.
HBO's The Last of Us[]
Background[]
Not much is known about Manny except that he joined the Fireflies before 2024 and befriended Abby, Owen, Mel, and Nora, otherwise known as the "Salt Lake Crew." He is of Hispanic descent.
Season 2[]
After Joel Miller's massacre of the Fireflies at St. Mary’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, Manny stayed behind for three days, trying to help some of the wounded. Despite his and his friends’ efforts, the injured still died. He and the others buried them a short walk from the hospital. While grieving, the group lamented their deaths and discussed tracking down Joel. Manny dismissed proposals to find more Fireflies, believing the Salt Lake City detachment was the last major group. He then watched as Abby and Owen talked about plans to find Joel and join a group that a fellow Firefly, Ed Dixon (Isaac's brother), had connections with.
On New Year’s Eve, the final day of 2028, Manny and his friends arrived in Jackson during a snowstorm. The following morning, he woke up surprised by how capable the town was, particularly impressed by their patrols, stable power lines, and use of dogs. He originally suggests ambushing a patrol, tying them up, and demanding Joel's location before being rebuffed by Owen. When Abby left to take watch, he asked Owen about his plan, only for Owen to admit that he hoped they could all convince Abby to give up her revenge quest and return to Seattle.
Later that day, while searching for the missing Abby, Manny and the others were surprised when she returned with two people on horseback. They led the group back to a nearby lodge, where Abby revealed the girl was Dina and the man was Joel. Realizing who Joel was, Manny quickly took Dina hostage, enabling Mel to drug her unconscious while Nora disarmed Joel in preparation for Abby’s torture. Manny watched as Abby tortured Joel, despite the others sobbing and protesting. When Ellie arrived and tried to shoot Abby, Manny wrestled the gun from her, suffering a slash to his forehead in the process. Owen and Nora restrained Ellie, and Manny drew his pistol to shoot her, but Owen stopped him. After Abby killed Joel, Manny brutally kicked Ellie in the abdomen to silence her as she screamed at the group. He then called Joel a "pendejo" before leaving the lodge with Abby and the others.
By April 2029, Manny was back in Seattle serving under the WLF. He was stationed as a sniper providing overwatch near the Seattle Space Needle. While there, his radioman asked him to check whether the checkpoints between their forward operating base and position were clear. Manny confirmed they were, allowing a platoon of WLF soldiers to safely advance through the streets.
