Manuel "Manny" Spamboni is one of the four major antagonists (alongside Francine Carruthers, Annie Scrambler and Danny Rebus) of the 2009 revival of The Electric Company (often referred as The New Electric Company). He's a loud and crude late teenager -- possibly the oldest of the Pranksters -- who despite being the sole member of the team without a power, makes up for that by being skilled with mechanics and robotics. Despite most of his antics serving as little more than just harmless mischief or pranks, he still has a couple of moments where he commits various downright immoral actions and veers into "villain" territory.
He was portrayed by Dominic Colón.
Personality[]
Manny's known for being sneaky, cunning and constantly being at odds with various people. He may not have any word-themed powers like his partners, but he still manages to be a credible threatby being skilled with mechanics and robotics. Although whlie he's definitely created a lot of impressive gadgets that prove to be very effective, he usually suffers from being very arrogant problem which often proves to be his downfall. He's also shown to be a coward ocassionally as he mostly relies on his gadgets to take down the titular company, and is completely helpless in situations where he has to be without them, not to mention being afraid of his mother and unable to stand up to her.
However despite being a constant troublemaker, Manny's far from heartless. He has a mini-robot which he treats like his own son and cares about deeply, and "The Flube Whisperer" shows he has a caring side for little defense-less beings and he even helps Keith to fix the circuit board controlling the temperature for the pet's biosphere, although he didn't want the other Pranksters to know about this.
He's also a huge fan of the comic book series "Mighty Bright Knight", which Jessica Ruiz of the Electric Company is also a fan of. This would allow the two of them to have a genuine bond and temporary friendship in "Might Bright Fight" where they, along with a Skeleckian named Harper attended comic-con, and entered a cosplay contest to show off their love and knowledge of the comic series and Manny even created costumes for them. But the friendship didn't last long as Manny left the group to become the creator's assistant, even though it meant abandoning their cosplay show.
Villainous Roles[]
Season 1[]
- Trouble Afoot: Manny replaces Hector's sneakers with identical replicas he created that take away his agility and leave him unable to control his feet right before a basketball duel, and smugly rubs Hector's disadvantage in his face through various screens and messages
- Dirty Laundry: He steals a Skeleckian meteorite and uses it to power up his letter-deleting gadget (the alphabet kind), which could also create word-balls. He would have actually won too, if his arrogance hadn't gotten the better of him and made him say yes to giving the Electric Company a chance to win, but this would only further prove that he was a coward.
- He's Not Frozen, He's Immobile: He had a gadget that froze people in time which he constantly used on his younger brother, and was working on a "permanent" setting for the gadget, which would leave him unable to move.
- Game On: Manny zaps Deek the Dino Dude out of his video game and into the real world just as Hector's about to beat him at the game, and tries various methods to prevent Deek from returning to the game just so he could keep his title as the "game king", including controlling Deek from afar and trapping him in an advertising billboard. Then he challenges The Electric Company to a challenge where Hector would have to never compete in a video game again if they lost
- A Whole New Francine: He takes part in Francine's ruse of having turned over a new leaf by using a word zapper to mess up the company's act in the show and staging a villain attack so Francine could step in and "catch" him, as part of a plan for Francine to join the Electric Company and gain the extra unique skill that comes with the membership. The plan fails as the company was suspicious of her sudden change of heart from the get-go.
Season 3[]
- Off Target: He assists Francine in her scheme to try and prevent Marcus from joining The Electric Company, by inventing a machine that would mess up Manny's wordballs and make him unable to throw straight.
- Prankster Holiday: He and Danny would take advantage of most of the Electric Company being out of town for the 4th of July, and use it as an opportunity to try and launch a giant wordball balloon into the sky reading "The Electric Company doesn't like you" in an attempt to ruin the company's reputation. The plan would have worked too, if Danny hadn't accidentally revealed their plan to Marcus (the only company member still in town), leading him to gather a close friend of his and Paul the Gorilla to face their plan.
- Wiki Wiki Walter: After he insults Shock's beatboxing skills and claims he could find a better beatboxer, he has Hector bet his power on it, where Manny would find a beatboxer that could rival Shock's skills and have the two compete against each other, and Hector would have to give up his power if Shock lost the duel. Said opponent would happen to be Wiki Wiki Walter -- Shock's former childhood friend who first taught him how to beatbox, but parted ways after losing a beatboxing duel to Shock and would hold a very strong grudge against Shock since that day, all the way to adulthood.
- Shrink, Shrank, Shrunk!: He borrowed the Skeleckian Shrinkinator 3002 from Dax, claiming it was for a science project, but in reality, he'd use the Shrinkinator to shrink Mrs. Helenfellerpelterhart's car to one inch, and various additional objects and even vehicles and buildings, claiming it was his unique superpower and even singing about it. While shrinking Jessica and Marcus with the inator was completely unintentional on his part, he shows no remorse for the accident and ran from the scene. He'd shrink himself down, come across Danny and have the latter hide him in his gym bag in an attempt to hide from the company and Dax.
Prankster Planet[]
In a long lost online video game, Manny and the rest of the Pranksters have a lair of their own called Prankster Planet.
Wordsuckeruppernator[]
Manny's titular gadget, the Wordsuckeruppernator, is used to suck up all the words on Earth. The only way to shut it down is by pressing all 13 off buttons all over the planet.
