| ~ Mara Vinci running the Commissary |
Mara Vinci, later known as Atonement Unit MV 1, is a minor antagonist in the 2022 game Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. She is a zealot-turned-traitor of the Atoma Prime operators, a group of convicts and rejects recruited by the Inquisition to weed out the heretics plaguing the hive city of Tertium.
Mara Vinci was introduced into the Commissary in the 13th patch of the game, and was voiced by Lauren O'Niell. At the start of the game, and until the player becomes level 30, Mara Vinci runs the Commissary, an in-game cosmetics store using in-game credits earned from missions. However, upon reaching level 30, Vinci is revealed as the traitor and executed, but reappears at the Commissary, now as a Servitor, supposedly atoning for her sins even in death. She is not fought in-game, nor interacted with outside cutscenes and the Commissary.
Biography[]
In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. Mara Vinci, originating from somewhere in the Moebian Domain of the Imperium of Man, seemed to be a zealot of the Imperial Creed, and was well-trained in combat. However, she was eventually convicted of a crime involving misplaced faith, and shipped to Atoma Prime. There, she was recruited into the ranks of Inquisitorial operators, expendable penal legionnaires used by the mysterious Inquisitor Grendyl to battle a growing Nurgle cult in the underhive of Tertium, which had been bolstered by the Moebian 6th, a former regiment of the Imperial Guard who also turned to Chaos. Vinci was first seen aboard the Mourningstar, a Rogue Trader frigate used as the Inquisition's Atoma Prime command ship, passing by the player alongside other recently-recruited operators, still wearing a green prison uniform denoting her crime. Like the player, Vinci worked to prove herself as a trusted operator, soon earning distinctive robes and combat armor typical of zealots. Additionally, while she would run combat missions, she managed to secure a cushy position at the Commissary, an onboard armor depot where new armor and weapon designs were sold to other operators.
However, at some unknown point after being recruited, Vinci secretly betrayed the Imperium by working with Captain Wolfer, leader of the Moebian 6th, to supply him with information from within the Mourningstar and sabotage missions. Additionally, Vinci fell deeper into the lure of Chaos, leaving a room full of heretical symbols and pulsing with enough Warp energy to make trained soldiers collapse. With Vinci's help, Wolfer was able to lead operators into death traps and spread the blight of Nurgle deeper in the hive.
As the player progresses, Mara Vinci continues to work in the shadows. At a certain level, Interrogator Rannick, part of Grendyl's retinue, discovered that someone had been intercepting transmissions from Mourningstar command and relaying them to the surface. Rannick soon discovered the room that Vinci had defiled with Chaos symbols, with Vinci watching from an upper level, but she slipped away before she could be seen. Vinci kept a front of being a loyal soldier during Rannick's investigation, and as the player became more trusted, so did Vinci, both working their way towards becoming true agents of the Inquisition. Outside of the Commissary, Vinci was only spotted sporadically during this time, seen consecrating an autogun at one point, returning from a combat mission alongside other operators at another point, and submitting a lasgun for refinement by tech-priest Hadron Omega-7-7. However, she also killed a soldier of Grendyl's warband, presumably when the soldier caught her in the act of intercepting a transmission. Vinci ended up abandoning the cogitator she was hacking, a data-interrogator still plugged into it, which was later found by the crew. Additionally, sometime later, Vinci was seen appearing visibly ill or shaken, bumping into a guardsman but brushing it off, possibly a sign of Nurgle mutations starting to arise.
Mara Vinci is executed by Rannick
Eventually, after secretly compromising other operators and running her own missions, both Vinci and the player were called before Rannick and the Mourningstar's officers. There, Rannick congratulated the player and Vinci for making a name for themselves through exemplary work, only to reveal that he had finally discovered who the traitor was. With that, Rannick pulled a pistol on the player, who stood firm, before Rannick turned the gun towards Vinci, mockingly asking if she thought she could hide her true nature from him. Vinci, terrified, turned and tried to run, only to be shot through the back by Rannick, killing her. With that, the player became an official part of the Inquisition's warband, walking out of the room while Rannick ordered Sergeant Major Morrow to remove Vinci's corpse from the room.
However, death was not the end for Mara Vinci. She was promptly revived by being converted into a servitor, a lobotomized cyborg meant for menial labor, and renamed Atonement Unit MV 1. Now servitorized, her remaining organic parts visibly scarred and decayed, Vinci was placed back in her position at the Commissary, mindlessly serving new customers.
