Marco Pasternak is a minor character in Better Call Saul.
He is the lifelong best friend of Jimmy McGill and his partner when it came to scamming. The two ran scams with each other when Jimmy McGill went under the name "Slippin' Jimmy".
He is portrayed by Mel Rodriguez.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Marco was born and raised in Cicero, Illinois. Jimmy met Marco through high school, they would go on to perform various scams on people that tricked people into buying fake Rolex watches. After Jimmy was arrested and was bailed out by his brother Chuck McGill, he informed Marco that he was moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico to work at his brothers law firm in the mail room. Marco disliked this idea saying it was a waste of Jimmy's talents, but Jimmy had already decided what he was going to do.
Marco and Jimmy didn't stay in touch much after moving, as Marco went on to work for his brother-in-law as a standpipe technician, with this being a job that he heavily disliked.
Better Call Saul[]
After suffering from his breakdown at the Bingo Parlor, Jimmy travels back to Cicero where he reunites with his old friend. For the next week, Marco and Jimmy plan to run scams just like they used to. After a week of successful scams, Jimmy says that he needs to go home and continue his profession as a lawyer, but Marco urges him to stay. Jimmy shows concern for his elderly clients and says reveals to Marco that he's a lawyer. He also reveals that he got a job offer at law firm Davis and Main, Jimmy sways to return home but Marco persuades Jimmy to run one more scam which he agrees to.
The night the scam happens everything is going well until Marco suffers from a heart attack. Marco's last words to Jimmy were telling him how this week was the best week of his life. Marco then passes away in an alleyway. At Marco's funeral, Jimmy is present and takes Marco's ring from his mother as a way to mourn and remember him. This changes Jimmy, as he refuses to take the job at Davis and Main and adopts a new thought, that he isn't obligated to do the right thing anymore. In the third season, there is a flashback that includes Marco, it's him and Jimmy visiting The McGill family's store which has since been abandoned.
Personality[]
Marco is a dedicated con artist and thrill seeker. He takes pleasure in scamming others, he has a poor moral compass as he questions Jimmy if his job is scamming old people. Marco is shown to be remorseful toward Jimmy over his parents having to sell their store, he is also shown to be a very giving person too, usually buying drinks for everyone at the bar using the money they got from scams.
Marco is shown to be a good friend, he is practically a brother to Jimmy and is the polar opposite of Chuck. Marco is sneaky and clever, shown to be not as skilled as Jimmy but still a very good scam artist. In his last moments, Marco enjoyed his life for the first time in ages. Shown to get the thrill out of scamming people, he was glad he got to do what he loves. In his dying moments, Marco expresses gratitude toward Jimmy for coming back and saying that he had the best week of his life because of him.
