This isn't just about sea rats. Humans, with their culture have escaped from the great system of nature and are committing crimes that cannot be amended. Those that don't realize this are what you could call "bugs" in the nature system...Monkey Business, our virus, takes such humans and returns them to nature. Understand? Au revoir.
~ Maria "Twinkle" Murdock's speech before trying to unleash her virus on Ganymede.

Maria "Twinkle" Murdock is the main antagonist of the Cowboy Bebop episode "The Gateway Shuffle". She is an ecoterrorist and leader of the organization known as the Space Warriors. Murdock view humanity as a virus to nature and seeks to get rid of them to preserve nature in her eyes

She was voiced by the late Mari Arita in Japanese and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn in English. In the 2021 live-action TV series, she was portrayed by Adrienne Barbeau.

Biography[]

Leader of an environmental activist group, The Space Warriors, Maria Murdock quickly radicalized the group, convincing her henchmen (who affectionately refer to her as "mom") to commit acts of mass violence over the pettiest offenses against their cause. At some point, a member of The Space Warriors named Gett was revealed to be a spy and stole a sample of a virus Murdock had been working on known as Monkey Business, which alters genetic code of humans by 2%, turning them into monkeys.

Upon learning of Gett's betrayal and theft of the virus, Murdock wasn't too worried and had her group destroy his ship, with him later dying of his wounds. Despite this, she still chose to punish her "son", Harrison, for letting Gett escape with the virus under his watch, to his dismay. Just then, Murdock overheard a patron order sea rat sautéed. As sea rat had been added to a list of endangered species, Murdock had her henchmen open fire on all the restaurant patrons, killing all of them except for Spike Spiegel and Jet Black. Having recognized Murdock, Spike and Jet arrest her before she can escape, planning on taking her in for the 25 million woolong bounty on her head. Murdock calmly tells her henchmen to let Spike and Jet take her away, all while promising to punish Harrison the moment she returns to them.

Meanwhile, Faye Valentine discovers the ruins of Gett's ship as well as the stolen sample of the Monkey Business virus. While aboard the Bebop, Murdock's henchmen notify the ISSP of their virus and threaten to turn the entire population into monkeys if Maria Murdock isn't returned to them. Having picked up Faye Valentine as well as the sample of the virus, Spike and Jet reluctantly turn Murdock over to the Space Warriors. Unbeknownst to Murdock, Spike had slipped the virus into her pocket. Despite their demands being met, Murdock orders her men to release the virus into Ganymede's atmosphere to demonstrate the virus' power, all while testing the virus on the protesting Harrison for his punishment.

Broadcasting her manifesto from within hyperspace, Murdock releases missiles carrying the virus upon Ganymede. Spike reluctantly cuts a deal with Faye Valentine for her assistance in closing the portal to hyperspace, trapping Murdock and The Space Warriors forever. As Murdock lamented her situation, the ship brakes and the sample of the Monkey Business virus emerged. She quickly realized Spike had hidden it in her pocket earlier and watched it shattered, leaving a horrified Murdock and her henchmen exposed and doomed to spend the rest of time floating through hyperspace as monkeys.
