Boys always want to touch things they aren't supposed to.
~ Mariah

Mariah is a minor antagonist in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and a minor character in Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak.

In Japanese, she was voiced by Miki Nagasawa in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage Of The Future, and Ayahi Takagaki in the anime and all subsequent appearances. In the English dub of the anime, she was voiced by Lauren Landa.

Appearance[]

Mariah is an attractive Egyptian woman with yellow eyes and gray hair. She wears a yellow crop top, a black skirt and leggings, and red shoes with bows. Besides that she has brown gloves, sunglasses, and finally a red hood.

Biography[]

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders[]

Mariah is one of the mercenaries hired by Dio Brando to assassinate Jotaro Kujo and his friends, though she serves Dio mostly because she finds him attractive. She initially attacks Joseph Joestar, using her Stand to create an outlet over a rock which he touches out of curiosity. This places a curse on him which turns him into a living magnet, attracting metal objects to himself.

Joseph finds something is wrong when metallic objects start flying into his direction, so he tries leaving the hotel he was on to seek help of his friend, but he ends trapped on a moving staircase. Mariah, who was just in front of him, uses the cords on her dress to trap him further, but as he is about to be crushed Avdol saves him by stopping the staircase, though he too touches an outlet and gets magnetized.

The two-start pursuing Mariah, but the magnetism intensifies as the two-start attracting each other. Mariah attracts them to a railroad where they are almost killed by a train, though Avdol saves them by burning a portion of the track. They eventually manage to separate from each other and get into separate ways, cornering Mariah in a street. However, their magnetism gets stronger, starting to attract large metal pieces and even cars. As the two start to get overwhelmed, Mariah uses knifes to cut the electric wires of the street, which also gets attracted to them.

Joseph begs her to dispel their curse, to which Mariah replies that she would like to do it as she finds Joseph attractive, but in her eyes Dio was much more attractive than him. At this point both Joseph and Avdol stop struggling and get attracted into each other, and Mariah ends up crushed between the two, thus deactivating her Stand. She is sent to the hospital with all bones in her body fractured.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak[]

Mariah is first seen in Crazy Diamond's Demonic Heartbreak finding Hol Horse in a hideout she is in, with the woman noting that Oingo and Boingo have been staying with her and that she wants Hol Horse to take them with her. After this, Mariah aks the cowboy about if he still fears his master, staying that she regrets working for DIO to the point that she is haunted by repeating nightmares of him commanding her to attack the Joestars from her past. However, this conversation is cut short after Hol Horse remarks that only fools fall to con artists, to which an angered Mariah (thinking Hol Horse insulted her and to avenge Boingo) repeatedly kicks Hol Horse and tries to attack him with magnetized darts and sabers until Boingo breaks up the fight.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven[]

Mariah appears as a minor antagonist of the game, serving DIO once again. She only appears in the fourth chapter, alongside a corrupted Zeppeli to confront Jotaro and Jonathan. However, they ended up being defeated, forcing Mariah to flee.

Powers and Abilities[]

Bast

Bastet

My body...! It's turned into a magnet!
~ Joseph Joestar on being affected by Baset's defeat.

Mariah's Stand, Bastet, manifests as a power outlet which she can place wherever she wants. Anyone who touches the outlet becomes magnetized, attracting metal objects to himself. The magnetism intensifies with time, but Mariah must keep relatively close to the victim to ensure that Bastet’s strength is maintained.

Mariah is not above using her sex appeal as a tactic, hiding bolts and nuts inside her top, which briefly makes it look her breasts are getting bigger with the magnetism pull on the hidden metal, which can distract opponents. She can also utilise the target’s magnetised state against them by using metal objects in the area as projectiles, starting from small items such as bolts, screws and nails, then on to objects which pose a lethal threat as Bastet’s power intensifies, such as whole cars and live electrical wires.

Trivia[]

  • Mariah is named after the famous American singer Mariah Carrey. Meanwhile, he Stand is named after Bastet, the Egyptian goddess of protection.
  • In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Heritage for the Future, Bastet appears to have a materialized, humanoid form that looks similar to the goddess herself (in a similar vein to Anubis). It's unknown whether or not if Bastet can canonically take this form, however.
  • Mariah's top may be custom made, as it could hide numerous nuts and bolts comfortably around her bosom, alongside being tear-resistant to said metal being pulled by Bastet's magnetic force.
