Marina Mills is the main antagonist of the 2016 supernatural horror film Friend Request/Unfriend. Mills is a shy, morbid college student who tries to make a friendship with Laura Woodson. When Laura rejects her, Mills commits suicide and wages a nightmare on her life as a ghost.
She was portrayed by Liesl Ahlers.
Biography[]
Mills was born Marina Nedivar. Her mother, Ada Nedivar, belonged to a commune that was reportedly a cult worshiping demonic entities. The commune was set ablaze, and Mills' mother was left brain dead and horribly burned while still pregnant. An emergency C-section saved Mills' life, and she was was sent to an orphanage.
Marina had a lonely, friendless childhood; many people found her strange and creepy, often doing things like staring into a black computer screen for hours at a time. When two boys refused to stop harassing her, she killed them them both by summoning a swarm of black wasps to sting them to death, leaving their faces swollen and mutilated.
She grew into her college years and went to the same university as Laura Woodson. Mills was regularly regarded as a freak and an outside, keeping to herself wearing dark slacks covering most of her body, and posting numerous disturbed images and animations on her Facebook account. She also suffered from trichotillomania, or a frenzy directed at pulling her hair out.
Laura pitied Mills and decided to extend a friend request, which Mills happily excepted. Laura was casually fine with socializing with Mills at first, but Mills became obsessive, and Laura was always put off by her social media activity. Mills wanted to come to her birthday party, but Laura lied she wouldn't have a big celebration. When Mills saw Facebook posts of Laura's big celebration with her boyfriend and friends, she was crushed. Confronting Laura at the lunch hall, Mills demanded answers and started to fight with her. As Mills shouted and they both struggled, Mills' hoodie came down to reveal where her head was balding due to her hair pulling. She was too embarrassed to continue and fled.
Laura unfriending Mills after that pushed her over the edge, causing her to commit suicide by hanging herself over an open fire, which was announced the next day at the university. However, Mills killed herself in front of a black mirror, which is used in black magic to conjure evil spirits or trap souls. Mills came back as a ghost, ready to destroy Laura's life. She started by hacking Laura's account and posting a video of her suicide, which started with Mills burning a sketch of Laura before she died. Laura's amount of friends online plummeted, and Mills threatened from beyond the dead to make her lonely.
Mills started killing off Laura's friends at the university and posting videos of their deaths, which she committed as forced suicides while possessing them. Gustavo was first, being swarmed by wasps in an elevator, before his head was bashed into the walls repeatedly. His girlfriend Isabella found him and called an ambulance. She was next to die after Gustavo flatlined. She was chased up the stairs and into a restroom at the hospital, where wasps swarmed her too. She then slashed her own throat with a scalpel in front of an unseen camera. Olivia was attacked by wasps and her head was slammed into glass, resulting in her being rushed to the hospital. Laura and her friend Kobe set off on a mission to find answers, eventually discovering Mills' past. Olivia, in the meantime, stole a cop's gun and shot herself under her chin.
Tracking the factory where Laura killed herself, at one of their previous destinations, Kobe gets a vision that threatens him as the next victim. He then grabs a knife and says to Laura "she can't make you lonely if your dead", before stabbing Laura's abdomen. She narrowly escapes and reaches the factory. Her mother Caroline sends her a live video call, showing Caroline with a kitchen knife walking away to another room, where she presumably kills herself. When Tyler arrives at the factory, Kobe stabs him through his throat before chasing Laura. When Laura's cornered, as Kobe's ready to off her to, Mills' wasps kill Kobe instead.
Laura reaches the black mirror and Laura's corpse. Laura's pulled into the mirror, where Mills confronts her. Lunging at her, Mills fully possesses Laura and takes over her body. She then runs Laura's life and online accounts, completely altering it to posts like on her former account. "Laura" is later seen dressing as Mills did while other students whisper about and laugh at her, then starting up from the laptop at the camera with eyes the same color as Mills.

Trivia[]
- Marina is very similar (most likely based on) Laura Barns from the 2014 film Unfriended:
- They were both unpopular girls at their schools and were bullied.
- They were the best friends of their films' main protagonists.
- They both committed a recorded suicide after their best friends betrayed them in some way (Laura's posted an embarassing video of her online, while Maria's lied to her about a date).
- They return as vengeful spirits with seemingly endless technopathic power.
- They uploaded their death videos on their best friend's Facebook accounts to destroy their reputations.
- They managed to turn the friends of their best friends against them.
- They killed their victims by possessing them and forcing them to commit suicide (one of whom shot themselves and another stabbed themselves) while recording the acts.
- Their best friends were their last victims, whom they lunged at and whose fates are ultimately unclear after (Laura attacks hers as the film ends with the final result being unseen; Maria possesses hers at the of her film)
