Mario is a major antagonist in Ralph Bakshi's 1975 controversial adult animated film Coonskin. He is a monkey-like clown who is the right-hand man of the Godfather who also serves as his messenger for the going-ons within Harlem.
He was voiced by the late Danny Rees.
Appearance[]
Mario is a short man with sickly green skin that wears red clown attire with orange shoes and an orange cap. His face has sunken-in eyes and big cheeks with red circles on them.
Biography[]
Mario is first seen informing the Godfather about Brother Rabbit taking down Mannigan, which makes the Godfather swear that he will "zero in" on him. When talking, they pass by two people in rags stomping grapes. Frustrated, Mario throws a knife at one of them, killing him and prompting the other one to stomp faster. When offered a toast to Rabbit's death, Mario left to find the Godfather's sons, who were heavily implied to be having incestuous sex in a trash can. The contract to kill Rabbit was given to Sonny, the Godfather's only straight son. However, Rabbit managed to kill Sonny, whose ashes were taken back to the Mafia's lair, where his mother weeps over his death. Later, the Godfather was seen waltzing with his wife, who intended to kill him to avenge Sonny's death. However, Mario shot and killed her.
Mario is seen again at a party, meeting with Fox and Bear about having Bear become a boxer for the Mafia as part of the Godfather's plan to lure Rabbit out and kill him. Bear eventually agreed and became an undefeated boxing champion. Later, after Rabbit got a fighter to challenge Bear, Mario is seen at the boxing match as the announcer, unaware that Rabbit had set up a tar imitation of himself. After the match started, the Godfather, his sons, and Mario took turns stabbing at the tar rabbit, but got stuck together. The real Rabbit sets up a bomb and leaves with Bear, Fox, and the boxing opponent as the bomb explodes, killing the Godfather and his men.
