I won't let you go to Mima-sama. I'm going to let you have a little fun here. But it's okay if I beat you.
~ Marisa to Reimu in the Story of Eastern Wonderland

Marisa Kirisame is the deuteragonist of the Touhou Project series. In the PC98 era, she was a major antagonist, aiding Mima in her quest of taking over the Hakurei Shrine but in later games she is seen making playable appearances and assisting Reimu in resolving every incident past Story Of Eastern Wonderland.

Appearance[]

Marisa has 3 separate designs, two of which were from the PC98 era and her current design from Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil to Barettofiriatachi no Yami-Ichiba ~ 100th Black Market. In her initial PC98 design she dons a purple clad witch robe and has crimson red hair, however, future designs of her PC98 version have traded her crimson red hair for golden blonde hair, which carries over to her post-EoSD design. In the PC98 era, before she had a broom, she rides around on a nuclear warhead she named Mimi-chan, a missile that is mostly white in color and partly red.

In EoSD and every other game since, she has the golden blonde hair of her later PC98 designs but also traded her purple witch robes for black-white ones which resemble a maid outfit. She also traded her warhead for a bamboo witch broomstick in this design.

Biography[]

PC98 era[]

In the PC98 era, she was a student of Mima and helped assist her in her goal of taking over the Hakurei Shrine and laying waste to the human race. This is also where Marisa is at her vilest, having crucified Reimu to a cross and attempting to burn her alive in a cutscene. After Mima's defeat, she abandoned most of her evil ways and would go on to join Reimu in resolving any coming incidents.

Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil[]

In Touhou Koumakyou: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Marisa attempted to resolve the incident in order to protect the townsfolk from the negative impacts of the Scarlet Mist that the SDM residents have put out in order for the mistress of the manor, Remilia Scarlet, to go outside and play in the daylight without worrying about sunlight touching her skin. She is one of the two playable protagonists in the game.

Touhou Eiyashou: Imperishable Night[]

In Touhou Eiyashou: Imperishable Night, she is once again a playable protagonist, and is partnered up with the dollmaker magician Alice Margatroid to resolve the incident. She finds the moon's prolonged appearance to be out of the ordinary and together with Alice, decides to investigate it.

If you play as the Border Team (Reimu and Yukari) however, Marisa ends up as a major deuteragonist and a minor antagonist in the story, as after seeing her partner up with Yukari which at the time Marisa still hasn't forgiven for being the cause of the Spring Snow Incident, expresses her disappointment towards Reimu for having partnered up with such a vile youkai and attacked her, deeming her to be one of the antagonists in her side of the story.

Powers and Abilities[]

Other than the classic witch superpower of being able to fly with her broomstick, Marisa is also proficient in the use of star danmaku, with her attacks usually involving star bullets and some of her spell cards having some correlation with stars and other things related to space or astronomy. She is also extremely adaptable, being able to copy other people's spell cards with ease and make them more powerful than when they were with their original owners. Being a kleptomaniac, she is also incredibly versatile, being the fastest human in Gensokyo. Through the power of the Mini-Hakkero which she obtained from her friend Rinnosuke Morichika, she is also able to use her iconic Master Spark, or her lesser known but still powerful Dark Spark. Her Mini-Hakkero can also be used as a sort of tiny fireplace or heater for either winter seasons or cooking.
