Mark Kinney is the main antagonist of the Lois Duncan novel and the made-for-TV horror/thriller adaptation Killing Mr. Griffin.

He's portrayed by Scott Bairstow.

Biography[]

Mark Kinney hated teacher Brian Griffith for strenuous classes and a sadistic pension for making children work even without getting rewards. Kinney plagiarizes a paper, causing Griffith to say he'll make Kinney repeat the class unless Kinney begs for leniency. Kinney meets the demands, but is still forced to retake the class in spite of the begging, leaving Kinney seething with rage and wantin revenge. He recruits the other students in the repeat class for a kidnapping to scare Griffin and teach him a lesson of his own. David Ruggles, Jeff Garrett, and Betsy Cline are all on board, but Susan McConell, a stellar student still not meeting Griffin's criteria, is much more hesitant but eventually caves as being Griffin's lure. Griffin finds her one of the students with more hope and aggress to an after-school "conference". By the time the two get to Griffin's car, the boys tie him up and cover his head before throwing him in the trunk. When they drive him to an isolated spot in the mountains, they take off the hood and put on a blindfold. While Susan leaves the whole plan and Betsy drives off without her despite being her ride, Kinney tries to make Griffin beg like Kinney begged. When Griffin fights back, the boys decided to leave Griffin isolated overnight.

Susan and David go against the groups original plan and check on Griffin. They're horrified to find he died from a severe cardiac, due to his necessity for his chest pain medication and the stress of the kidnapping. When the other kids are called back, Mark loses it and blackmails the other kids into covering up the crime, Susan saying he left with a beautiful woman and kept checking his watch. The boys bury Griffin's body deeper in the mountains, and Betsy and David try to bring the car to the airport, but they're spotted by an officer who gave Betsy a speeding ticket. Changing plans in a hurry, Jeff puts it in his garage to repaint and move it later.

The disappearance makes headlines, and Kinney's ex, Lana Turnboldt, finds Griffin's medicine with her fiancé during a picnic in the range. The police conduct a short search leading to Griffin's body. David reveals Griffin's ring is in the possession of his grandmother, Irma Riggles, who refuses to take it out out of assuming it's from David's deadbeat father. Susan tells Kinney, but she's horrified that Kinney killed Irma for the ring, as he was seen with his adored brown sweater. She panics and tells Jeff and Betsy they have to turn themselves in, but the two, along with Mark, tie her up as well, and while Jeff and Betsy go to hide griffin's car, Mark sets her home curtains on fire to burn her alive there. Kathy Griffin, along with a detective wanting to question her, rescue her and capture Mark. Mark is planned to face three separate trials, two for murder, one for attempted murder. The other kids also face charges, but Susan's mother works with a lawyer to get her exonerated, and Kathy gives Susan a recommendation letter Brain Griffin wanted to send on her behalf, relaying how exemplary and promising she is.
