~ Krieger planning to rape Sarah Logan |
Mark Krieger is the secondary antagonist of the Law & Order: Special Victims Unit episode "Remorse". He is a small-time criminal who rapes journalist Sarah Logan.
He was portrayed by Jason Field.
Early life[]
Krieger worked off and on as a welder, but he mostly lived a hand-to-mouth existence as a small-time con artist, robbing people and passing off bad checks. He was also arrested several times for assault, mostly resulting from bar fights.
Three months before the events of the episode, he went out drinking with an acquaintance, small-time drug dealer Tommy McConaugh, and talked him into breaking into a closed ice skating rink. He told McConaugh that the rink would be the ideal place to rape a woman, "to get some without the wining and dining". He then attacked television journalist Sarah Logan, knocking her unconscious as she was walking home from work. He and McConaugh took turns raping her before leaving her there, bloodied and traumatized.
"Remorse"[]
One night, Krieger meets a woman at a hotel bar and charms her into getting a room with him. Once there, however, he gets drunk and becomes sexually aggressive, turning her off. As Krieger goes to the bathroom to throw up. she watches the late night TV news and sees Logan reporting on her own rape; Kreiger's would-be conquest recognizes him from Logan's description of her rapist. Frightened, she calls 9-11, and Detectives Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler of the NYPD's Special Victims Unit go to the hotel room and arrest Krieger as he is bent over the toilet.
Krieger is released on bail, and Benson and Stabler investigate further when evidence surfaces of a second rapist. They eventually arrest McConaugh, who tells Captain Donald Cragen that the rape had been Krieger's idea. Meanwhile, Detective John Munch, the original investigator in Logan's rape case, walks her through the process of identifying Krieger as her rapist in a suspect lineup and goes with her to court, where Krieger tries to intimidate her by glaring at her as she sits with Munch in the gallery.
When Logan is killed in a mail bombing, Krieger becomes the prime suspect, and Benson, Stabler, Munch, and Detective Monique Jeffries get enough evidence to arrest him. When they try to apprehend him at his apartment, he takes off running to his car, which blows up when he turns they key to the ignition, killing him instantly. The detectives ultimately arrest William Lexner, an obsessed fan of Logan's, for both bombings; he killed Logan because he believed that her talking about her rape on TV was "unladylike", and Krieger to punish him for "ruining" her.
