~ Ulysses on the origin of the Marked Men |
The Marked Men are a group of enemies featured in "Lonesome Road", the final DLC for Fallout: New Vegas. They are a joint group of former New California Republic troopers, Legionaries, and Divide denizens with a unique form of ghoulification.
History[]
Before the Marked Men came to existence, a prosperous post-war community in Death Valley existed known as the Divide. Its glamour attracted both the NCR and the Legion, who both set up shop in the region. However, the community was ultimately destroyed in 2277 when nuclear missiles from underground detonated, causing a colossal earthquake and sending lots of ash and dirt into the air. The plethora of radiation released resulted in many people present becoming ghouls and the ash and dirt in the air, carried by the abnormal weather patterns invented by the Think Tank at Big Mountain, caused many of said ghouls to lose all of their skin but still remain alive. Despite their differences, the Marked Men united under their common condition.
Ulysses, a former Legion Frumentarius who deserted and decided to live in the Divide, witnessed the destruction and was rescued by pre-war Eyebots who falsely recognized him as United States military personnel and nursed him back to health, thus sparing him from becoming one of the Marked Men. He asserts that the Courier was indirectly responsible for the destruction due to them carrying a nuclear detonation device on behalf of the NCR from Navarro, a former Enclave army base.
The Marked Men remained in the Divide due to inability to leave the confines of its radiation without dying, and are still present four years later when Ulysses invited the Courier to meet up with him in the Divide to witness him launch nuclear missiles against the Legion and the NCR. The Courier encountered many hostile Marked Men along the way, including Blister, Beast, Bonesaw, and Blade, a quartet of unique marked men who served in elite positions in the NCR and Legion.
After a rendezvous with Ulysses, the Courier will be ambushed by the Marked Men regardless of whether or not Ulysses was spared. After the Marked Men are dealt with, the Courier has the option to launch Ulysses' nuclear missiles or disarm them. If the Courier launches the nuclear missiles, the Long 15 outpost of the NCR and/or the Dry Wells encampment of the Legion will be devastated and can be visited, where a new generation of Marked Men are present.
Members[]
- Blister
- Beast
- Bonesaw
- Blade
Optional[]
- Gaius Magnus (appears if the courier nukes the Legion)
- Colonel Royez (appears if the courier nukes the NCR)
Appearance[]
The Marked Men appear as skinless male ghouls who wear damaged NCR and Legion gear with crude repairs. Their muscles are completely visible, and many Marked Men still have some hair remaining on their heads.
Trivia[]
- Due to the fact that only male Marked Men are present, coupled with the fact that the NCR also conscripts women, it can be inferred that only men are capable of surviving the ghoulification process associated with the Marked Men and that women cannot survive it.
- Some of the NCR's ghouls in the Divide and the optionally nuked Long 15 are non-marked civil and feral ghouls, where the latter never has a conclusive sex. This could just mean that not all ghouls had their skin flayed in the process.
