| “ | It’s known as a gas weapon. It spread like fog downwind… and engulfed that village. Any Subjects of Ymir who inhaled the gas, even the smallest bit... were immediately frozen in place. They no longer had control over their bodies, and they lost consciousness. I was never told exactly clear how it works… but if my spinal fluid makes it inside the body of any Subject of Ymir, a Coordinate is fetched inside of them to which the Power of the Titans can be sent. All that was left for me to give the order. I used this path to send the Power of the Titans to those coordinates. Those Titans are connected to one another by way of my Beast Titan. That is why I can impose my will on them, and why they move according to my orders. | „ |
| ~ Zeke Yeager to Levi Ackerman about what happened to the village of Ragako, caused by the Marleyan soldiers. |
| “ | Recon in force… All I know is, the incursion on Paradis four years ago was a recon-in-force mission to prepare for a large-scale attack… it was a test, to learn about the enemy's combat strength… that's what your mother got wrapped up in. | „ |
| ~ Falco Grice explaining to Kaya why her mother was killed. |
The Marleyan Gas Weaponry Soldiers are minor antagonists from the manga and anime Attack on Titan. They were part of a small contingent of Marleyan soldiers (possibly a trio in the manga version) who were ordered to gas an Eldian village within the Walls on Paradis Island, with Zeke Yeager’s spinal fluid, resulting in a temporary Titan invasion in Wall Rose. They serve as supporting antagonists in the first half of the Clash of the Titans arc.
Appearances[]
The soldiers were all fully covered while mostly wearing the standard Marleyan military battle uniforms and helmets, but they are noted for wearing old style gas masks that have a hose which connects to small box respirator bags, placed on their stomachs with straps, while also wearing large gloves. The gas masks themselves are black in color and have big circular glasses.
Biographies[]
Background[]
The soldiers were residents of the continent of Marley that eventually joined their nation's military, serving in the Marley Army. They were presumably noteworthy soldiers, as they would become experts in using Marley’s more modern gas weaponry technology, while also being trustworthy enough to travel into Paradis Island’s Walled territory.
Clash of the Titans arc[]
During 850, after the absence of progress the Marleyan Warriors have shown in their mission to seize the Founding Titan for five years, the Marleyan military decided to help speed up the development, sending a small contingent to survey the enemy territory and do a trial sample version of a future larger-scale invasion. The soldiers travelled to Paradis Island together with Zeke Yeager and Pieck Finger, while carrying a gas weapon that had already been previously used to defeat and conquer enemy nations, including in a war during 844.
The soldiers, Zeke, and Pieck reached the Walls and for a while camped in the ruins of Utgard Castle. They subsequently went up to the Eldian village of Ragako, with the soldiers placing many cannisters around the town, out of these pieces would begin leaking large amounts of gas that swept throughout the village. The soldiers are seen watching the fog envelop the village safely from afar. This gas was Zeke’s spinal fluid turned into a gaseous form, after each inhabitant of Ragako inhaled it, Zeke then let out a scream which acted as a trigger for the transformation, everyone in Ragako were then turned into Pure Titans. This was meant to be a reconnaissance operation, intended as a test to investigate the enemy's strength and to platform a full-scale real invasion of the Walls in the future.
The soldiers would then quickly travel back to Marley's wharf on the island's southern borders with Pieck, by using her Cart Titan, while Zeke would transform into his Beast Titan form and begin leading the Titans to different parts of Wall Rose's lands in the south. Their canned food provisions and one bottle of booze were left at Utgard, and would later be found by their comrade Reiner Braun, Ymir, and other Survey Corps soldiers.
After the entire population of Ragako, save for Mrs. Springer's Titan, is wiped out by the Survey Corps and the Garrison, two branches of the Eldian military, investigations and evidence found at the village's ruins and with the help of Connie Springer, a former citizen of Ragako, nearly confirm to the Military that all Pure Titans used to be human beings.
War for Paradis arc[]
Four years later, while discussing part of the events of the third invasion of the Walls, the girl Kaya was informed by Marleyan soldier Falco Grice that the massacre was only meant as a small test for an actual and proper attack of large scale with Zeke's controlled Titans in the future. According to Gabi Braun, this information was supposed to be secret affairs of the Marleyan state, although common knowledge within the country's military and at that point outdated information not holding any new secrets to learn.
The account of the Ragako massacre was explained in detail by Zeke to the Eldian military as soon as he arrived to Paradis Island from Marley. One fabricated part of the event is added by Zeke, claiming that the villagers who had inhaled the gas weapon containing his spinal fluid had frozen up and went paralyzed, before he had screamed to transform them. This was added in order to avoid any possible suspicion against Yelena, who during the last two years successfully pressed the government to give captive Marleyan soldiers freedom, rights, and jobs that gave them access to their enemies' food and drinks. Zeke was questioned multiple times about it by Captain Levi, to see if the story changed and to see if he would ever show any visible remorse or sadness for the village's victims.
Fate of the soldiers[]
It’s unknown what happened to the soldiers ever since they left Paradis, such as if they possibly participated in the four-year long Marley Mid-East War, the Raid on Liberio, or the Revenge for Liberio in Shiganshina District. It is also unknown what happened to them after the Rumbling was activated. If any or all of them survived all the previous battles, it’s highly possible they perished during the Rumbling, unless any of them survived as part of the remaining 20% of humanity.

Trivia[]
- In both manga and anime, it is unclear how many normal soldiers accompanied Zeke and Pieck for the recon mission within the Walls.
- In each of the few manga panels they appear in, only two or three of the soldiers are seen at the same time, making it possible they were just a trio.
- In the anime, at least seven soldiers are confirmed to have participated in the mission with Zeke and Pieck.
- Despite the soldiers, Zeke and Pieck chronologically coming to the Walls during the final chapters of the Female Titan arc (Season 1's final episodes), before the raid on Stohess District, and starting the third Titan invasion, only Zeke in his Beast Titan form is introduced during the beginning of the Clash of the Titans arc (Season 2), whilst the soldiers and Pieck retreated back south of the Walls.
- The soldiers only make one brief appearance during a flashback of the War for Paradis arc (Season 4 Part 1's second half). Their faces are never shown.
- They were the first modern fully "ethnic" Marleyans (non-Subject of Ymir citizens with full Marleyan nationality) to have ever set foot inside the Walled territory of Paradis Island after over 100 years, not counting Reiner and Annie, who are "part-Eldian" by one parent's side.
- Some Eldians were said to belong to groups that were not Subjects of Ymir (such as the puppet King Fritz), and their descendants who were granted nobility in the Walls by Karl Fritz even chose to keep their family lines "pure" by not mingling with the common population who were Subjects of Ymir.
- If any of these soldiers managed to live up to the final chapters, it remains unknown if they were among the Marleyan soldiers who participated in the Battle of Heaven and Hearth at Fort Salta, being the final battle of the story.
