Daniel, Julia, Lea and Artemus Marquis are the secondary antagonists of the 2022 period murder mystery The Pale Blue Eye.
Biography[]
Dr Daniel Marquis was the doctor at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Dr Marquis was married to a woman named Julia and had two children, Lea and Artemus. Lea was sickly and suffered from seizures, with doctors warning her she had months to live. In desperation, the Marquises turned to the occult and Satanic practices.
While out one night, Artemus used his uncle's officer uniform to dismiss a patrolman. He found the corpse of Leroy Fry, having been murdered by detective Augustus Landor in revenge for Fry raping his daughter Mattie, and cut his heart out to use in Lea's ritual, which succeeded in making her feel better. Landor is later called to investigate the murders, and takes the opportunity to discern the identity of his daughter's other rapist, Randolph Ballinger, and murder him.
Lea seduces another cadet, Edgar Allan Poe, and convinces him to partake in a ritual which requires him to have his heart cut out. Landor interrupts the ritual and Lea accidentally knocks over a candle, burning the shack they are in down. Lea continues to chant Latin to heal herself, but is struck and killed by a falling piece of wood. Her brother and mother attempt to revive her, but Landor drags Julia away right before both her children are crushed to death by more falling debris.
Artemus and Lea are framed for Fry's and Ballinger's murders. Dr Marquis, who was seemingly ignorant of his family's mischief, resigns in disgrace.
