Marsissus is the main antagonist of the 2022 Doctor Who Easter special "Legend of the Sea Devils".
He is portrayed by Craig Els.
Biography
Marsissus was the leader of a group of Sea Devils, an ancient race of aquatic humanoid reptiles, who previously ruled Earth before humans evolved.
At one point, he had imprisoned a legendary sailor named Ji-Hun who was searching for the lost Flor de la Mar treasure. Marsissus was later captured and turned into a statue and placed in a village in China.
In 1807, a pirate named Madam Ching arrived in the village searching for the treasure (as she needed it to pay ransom for her kidnapped children and crew) and inadvertently releases Marsissus, who then attacks and kills several of the villagers before being confronted by the Thirteenth Doctor and her companions Yaz Khan and Dan Lewis. The trio capture Marsissus in a net, but he manages to cut himself free and escapes by summoning the wreck of Ji-Hun's ship where he meets with his fellow Sea Devils.
Marsissus was later confronted by The Doctor and Yaz and reveals that Ji-Hun has been kept alive in status. Marsissus wishes to have Ji-Hun's keystone (which Ji-Hun gave to his most trusted crew member Lee) and learns that it is in possession of a young man named Yin Ki (who is a descendant of Lee). Marsissus takes the keystone from Ying Ki and returns to Ji-Hun's ship where he reveals his plan to The Doctor that he will use the keystone to change the magnetic fields of the Earth, melting the polar icecaps and flooding the planet, thus wiping out humanity and reclaiming Earth for the Sea Devils.
Marsissus and his fellow Sea Devils later battle The Doctor, Yaz, Dan, Madam Ching, Ying Ki and Ji-Hun. Marsissus is later defeated and disarmed. The Doctor intends to send Marsissus back into hibernation in the sea, but Ji-Hun chooses to kill the Sea Devil instead as revenge for kidnapping him and causing his crew's deaths.
