Senator Martha Reeves is the overarching antagonist of the Criminal Minds: Evolution episode "Oedipus Wrecks". The senator is a prominent real estate mogul and Virginia congresswoman whose son Benjamin Reeves turned to serial murder of women, having abused him and warped his personality while also covering for him to protect her reputation.
She was portrayed by Beth Broderick, who also portrayed Jezebelda Spellman in Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Biography[]
Senator Reeves is portrayed as a domineering, presumably sexually abusive matriarch over her son, as well as cold, ruthless, and professionally dangerous. The younger Reeves hated his mother, but rarely fought her in spite of wanting for years to kill her as revenge. When Benjamin Reeves found serial killer Elias Voit online, he agreed to operate Voit's darknet forums with his dating app server, and in exchange, Voit encouraged Reeves' desires to kill the senator and promised him an opportunity to practice on other women as a buildup. As Reeves enjoyed biting as a sexual thrill, Voit designed a sharpened metal mouthpiece, which Reeves used for raping and assaulting a sex worker in D.C., then raping and murdering three women working as congressional employees Reeves lured through his dating site. Senator Reeves is first introduced when ordering her son to attend a fundraiser, and when he refuses, she orders him to kneel in front of her. When he does so, she touches his face and mutters her orders again, which he capitulates to. When Senator Reeves finds out her son was arrested for attempted murder of the women he previously attacked, she went straight to Deputy Director Doug Bailey at the FBI and ordered Reeves' release. She directly threatened Unit Chief Emily Prentiss she'd tear all their careers apart if Reeve wasn't let go effective immediately, in spite of his confessions to Voit's murders by naming several people Voit killed. When mother and son returned to their mansion, Voit appeared with a pistol, appalling Senator Reeves. When Voit encouraged her son that that moment was the time to act on his rage toward the senator, Senator Reeves tied to talk him down from the idea, to no avail. The younger Reeves tore half of the senator's face off with his teeth, killing her and leaving her to be found by the FBI. Reeves later escaped with Voit and was shot as a patsy to frame for Voit's crimes.
