Martha Veronesi is the main hidden antagonist of the giallo film Arabella, Black Angel. Martha is a killer of people she finds promiscuous, set off by the sexual escapades of her daughter-in-law Deborah.
She's portrayed by Italian actress Ida Galli, who also portrayed Lisa Baumer in The Case of the Scorpion's Tail and Maria Marchi in The Bloodstained Butterfly.
History[]
Martha had an aversion to free-willing sex and promiscuity, which drove her to kill her husband by castrating him alive without ever being caught. Her daughter, Gina Fowler, was taken from her custody and given to another family to be adopted while Martha resided in an asylum. Gina would later become a police inspectors to make use of her trauma. When she found out Deborah, her son Francisco's wife, killed an officer extorting rape from her and Francisco encouraged her to continue searching for sex for him to write about in his next book, Deborah taking a prostitute's nickname of "Arabella", Martha fully snapped and started stalking Deborah to set trysts up for her. Armed with a pair of tailor shears, the same ones she killed her husband with, she killed a blackmailer stalking Deborah and a lover of Deborah's similarly by stabbing their abdomens and cutting off their genitals. She then slit the throat of a woman named Agnese, before cutting off her underwear and slashing her genitals as well. Agnese was a reporter dating the inspector in charge of the case, Gina Fowler, Francesco’s sister, just to tie the crimes to her tragic past in a news report. Martha finally revealed herself when Francisco also raped Deborah, Martha stabbing him to death and showing herself without realizing she killed her son until it was too late. Confessing all her crimes, Martha was stopped from killing Deborah and arrested, whether she was imprisoned or institutionalized being uncertain.
