The Martians are an evil species that appeared in the Popeye the Sailor Man episode, "Ace of Space". They are a bunch of gibberish-speaking aliens that abducted Popeye and used him as an involuntary test subject for all their alien technology.

Biography

In "Ace of Space" some Martians were flying through outer space when they spotted Popeye down on Earth and saw him as a suitable lab rat for their scientific experiments. The Martians used a toilet plunger to kidnap Popeye, suck him out of his car, and take him to Mars.

On Mars, Popeye was used as a test subject for the aliens to test out their weapons of destruction, while an audience of Martians watched him in a coliseum and cheered for his destruction. The first weapon they used on him was a Cosmic Ager, which turned him into a 125-year-old man. Popeye ate some spinach to reverse his aging process but he took too much and turned himself into a two-year-old baby. Popeye spat out some spinach and turned himself back into his normal 40-year-old self again. The aliens were outraged that Popeye was able to stand their weapon of destruction and then took him to another destruction device.

The next test was to strap Popeye down into an Atom Apple Smasher, which was a big fat machine that was supposed to destroy his Adam's apple. Popeye ate more spinach to make his Adam's apple as tough as the Rock of Gibraltar. When The Atom Apple Smasher was activated, it broke in half upon impact and didn't leave a dent on Popeye.

The final test was an Electronic Disintegrator, which was their most powerful weapon ever. The weapon successfully disintegrated Popeye and left behind only his can of spinach. The aliens obtained it and recognized as the "mysterious weed" that supplements all of the earthling's strength. The Martians planned on taking some for themselves but they got into a fight over who got to use it first and then dropped the can over to where Popeye once stood. The can was lifted up and eaten by the now non-existent Popeye, implying that Popeye was merely invisible. Popeye became visible again and broke out of the shackles he was in to fight the aliens. Popeye beat them all up until they turned into a bunch of delicate little pansies dancing around a maypole. After making the aliens harmless, Popeye took their spaceship and flew it back home.
