Martin is the secondary antagonist of the 2021 Netflix apocalyptic horror film Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead.

He is part of a team to rob Bly Tanaka's casino (under the latter's request) in Las Vegas who was overrun with zombies, although he and his boss had their own agenda in mind.

He was portrayed by Garret Dillahunt.

Biography[]

Background[]

Nothing is known about him prior to the movie's events, except that he became at some point Bly Tanaka's right-hand. Tanaka is a wealthy mobster and the founder of one of Las Vegas' casino, who sent a team of robbers led by Scott Ward in an attempt to retrieve Tanaka's money from the underground vault, as the city has been overrun with zombies led by a zombie called Zeus in a matter of days. Martin was sent to support and oversee the team.

The Heist[]

When one of the robbers, Chambers, scolds him by saying that he's untrustworthy, Martin, who felt very wronged, decides to trick her into going in a room full of zombies, ending in Chambers' overwhelmed by the undead, although Martin was almost killed in the process. He then went with another teammate going by the name of Lily, in an attempt to catch the zombie queen and take a sample of her blood, which he intended to sell to the US government in exchange for big money. However, he instead beheaded the queen and took the still-alive head with him, telling Lily that the zombie's head will be far more valuable than just a blood sample. Lily told him that he was an idiot for doing this, as this would set Zeus in fury. Indeed, when Zeus discovered the headless body of his "wife", he turned hostile and ordered his zombies to devour any human they come across, taking part in the chase himself.

Martin and Lily resumed the heist, but Martin betrayed her and the rest of the gang by trapping them in the underground while the zombies, including Zeus, were rampaging in the vault. While he was escaping on foot, he realized that Lily swapped her bag with his, thus leaving him without the zombie's head. He then stumbled upon Valentine, a zombified tiger that mauled him to death after a short struggle, chewing parts of Martin's legs and cheeks before swallowing his head, outright killing him rather than turning him into a zombie.

Personality[]

Martin is an arrogant, sarcastic, foul-mouthed, and possibly misogynistic psychopath who hid his true intent since the beginning and didn't hesitate to betray Ward's team and leaving them to die in atrocious ways, even taking delight in the fact that he successfully betrayed them and will become wealthy, making him quite sadistic as well. He also severely underestimated the zombie threat and didn't even care to cut the queen's head off rather than just taking a sample of her blood, thus triggering the anger of Zeus and his undead minions, although it's possible that he intended to have the team eaten by the zombies so that none of Tanaka's money would actually be retrieved and given to the robbers. He also didn't think much of allowing the US Army to produce weaponized zombies for their shady purposes, possibly endangering the whole world as well should "superzombies" would be misused, as long as he would get paid.
