Martin Madrazo is one of the two overarching antagonists (alongside Don Percival) of the 2013 video game Grand Theft Auto V and a major character in Grand Theft Auto Online.
In his characterisation, he is a notorious Mexican-American drug kingpin as well as the founder and leader of Madrazo Cartel, being a powerful and wealthy criminal figure living in Los Santos with his wife Patricia and their son Miguel respectively. Madrazo had several court cases involving his gang activity but was never convicted at the time as the witnesses who were to testify him were eliminated. He also mistreats and cheats on Patricia on certain occasions.
He is voiced by Alfredo Huereca.
Biography[]
Grand Theft Auto Online (Pre-GTA V)[]
Madrazo hires the player for Contact Missions. It is implied that the "witnesses" who went missing that were going to testify against Madrazo are killed by the player in several of his missions.
Grand Theft Auto V[]
After retired career criminal Michael De Santa pulled down Madrazo's mistress' deck, believing it is the home of a tennis coach that slept with Michael's wife, Madrazo sends several hitmen in an attempt to have Michael and his accomplice Franklin killed, but they fail. Madrazo then appears himself wants Michael to pay for the damages he caused. Michael with the help of his friend Lester Crest then robs the Vangelico jewel store to pay back Madrazo.
Madrazo then hires Michael and his friend Trevor Phillips to take out his cousin, Javier Madrazo, because he plans to testify against him with some files as evidence. Madrazo sets up a gun in the hills, so Michael uses to shoot down the plane Javier was in. Trevor then heads to the crash, assassinates Javier who survived the crash and gets the files. When Madrazo refused to pay Trevor for the job, the Canadian angrily cuts his ear off, kidnaps his wife and, steals his car, returning to his trailer. In response to Trevor's actions, he banned him and Michael from entering Los Santos, unaware his vendetta on the two is discovered by Franklin and Lester themselves. As such, this also leads to Trevor's competitor Elwood O'Neil to return back to Sandy Shores upon learning of Trevor's return there. This also leads to Devin Weston's heist for the luxury cars to be put on hold, although Devin presumably never finds out.
In order to prevent Madrazo from having him and Trevor murdered for the incident, Michael retrieved an Azteca fertility statue from a sunken container and handed it over to Madrazo as a peace offering. Madrazo's wife is returned to him, but Trevor threatens to kill him if he mistreats her again so Madrazo nervously accepts, leaves the two alone and lifts their ban from entering Los Santos. Later on, Patricia will occasionally contact Trevor and tell him Martin is treating her much better. By the end of the game, it's presumed that Martin is still running his businesses and criminal empire, but from now on he will treat Patricia better, as Trevor has already warned him about what will happen if he refuses. Martin was never seen or heard from again in the story.
Grand Theft Auto Online (Post-GTA V)[]
In The Cayo Perico Heist Update, Martin Madrazo is never seen. His son Miguel, hires the online protagonists to eliminate evidence held by rival cartel boss Juan Strickler, in order to impress Martin. However, Martin doesn't seem to pay much attention to Miguel's dealings as he's more concerned with cryptocurrency. It is revealed that Patricia had an affair with Trevor at some point, but Martin hasn't done anything about it, due to his fear of Trevor.
He later returns in the 2025 update, having had his ear either replaced or restored.
Personality[]
Madrazo is often described as a psychopath because of his short temper and his ruthless methods of dealing with people who cross him in any way, shown when he has Michael assassinate his cousin Javier Madrazo. Despite this, he shows gratitude to Michael when he paid for the house and despite their rocky beginnings, Madrazo trusted Michael enough to employ him (and may have a crush on him). However, unlike typical rich psychopaths who would often prefer to maintain a positive image, he prefers instead to openly and constantly remind people around him of his psychopathic traits, and enjoys making people, even those closest to him, fear him. He also appears to be misogynistic, as he mistreats his wife and has had several affairs with other women. Despite that, he was angry when his wife was kidnapped by Trevor and wanted her returned to him. However, he's also shown to be terrified of people who can match his psychopathic tendencies, shown when he tells Trevor that he'll go to great lengths to avoid contact with him after Trevor threatens him with retaliation should he ever mistreat Patricia again.
Madrazo seems to respect people who respect him back, as seen in GTA Online, where he will be friendly towards the player and call them his friend if the job he gave was completed successfully. Not doing a job for Madrazo in GTA Online for a period of time will result in angry phone calls from him.
Relationships[]
Martin most likely has a much larger extended family, though we are introduced to 4 members of his family. there's his wife, Patricia, whom he is verbally abusive towards. His son, Miguel, who is a capo in his cartel. His cousin, Javier, who is a soldier in his cartel, and who later attempted to rat on him but was killed by Trevor. And his cousin "El Estupido", who is also a soldier in the cartel. Patricia and Miguel are close with a woman named Kaylee, her husband Evan, and their daughter Jackie, whom Miguel went to college with. Patricia is shown to also be well loved by Miguel's friends who attend pool parties at his mansion, she is shown calling them family when saying bye to them after one party.

- Martin Madrazo is one of the few characters in Grand Theft Auto V to never appear outside of cutscenes.
- Madrazo is a Spanish slang word meaning punch or blow.
- Even though Martin is the main antagonist for the first half of the game following Marriage Counseling, he’s the only major antagonist to not be killed in Deathwish, presumably because the protagonists never had any problems with him after Monkey Business, that and he was incredibly friendly to Michael.
