Martin Somers was a corrupt businessman and the former CEO of Starling Port. He is a minor antagonist in Season 1 of Arrow.
He was portrayed by Ty Olsson, who also portrayed Red in War of the Planet of the Apes, Benny Ironside in Slasher and Talbert in Smallville.
Biography[]
Martin Somers was a corrupt businessman who ran the Starling Port and secretly accepted bribes from the Triads to smuggle drugs through his port. Somers was then coerced by Malcolm Merlyn to contribute to the Undertaking or risk his illegal activities being exposed to the public which was why his name was on The List, a notebook that the members of Tempest used.
Four years later when Oliver Queen returned, Oliver had become a murderous vigilante known as the Arrow. Somers had his employee Victor Nocenti's throat slit when the latter threatened to tell the police of what had been going on. Nocenti's daughter Emily, later filed a civil suit against Somer's, taking him to court, represented by then-legal aid attorney Laurel Lance.
At his port, Somers was confronted by the Arrow, demanding that he testify in the trial, and confess to having Victor Nocenti killed, telling Somers that there won't be a second warning. Afterwards, Somers lied to then-Detective Quentin Lance that he was attacked by the Arrow and called the situation a conflict of interest since Lance's daughter was suing him.
Lance still refused to believe Somers after finding one of the Arrow's arrows at the scene. Somers later contacted Chien Na Wei, making it clear to her that he didn't get paid enough to get arrows shot at him, and that the Arrow was a bigger problem to their operation than Victor Nocenti ever was.
Chien Na Wei made the point that the problem was now Emily Nocenti, and that they could take her out, as unlike the Arrow, they knew where to find her. However, Somers refused since he was aware that Laurel would never let it go and made arrangements for Chien Na Wei to kill her instead.
After Chien Na Wei failed to kill Laurel Lance, Somers tried to flee Starling City out of fear that the Triads would kill him since the Triads would erase every piece of evidence of their smuggling operation. While gathering his things to leave, the Arrow made his presence known to Somers. Though he tried to escape, Somers was cornered by the vigilante, where he was forced to confess to having Victor Nocenti killed. The confession was recorded, and given to Lance, giving the District Attorney enough evidence to prosecute Somers.
