Martin Watts is the main antagonist of the Chicago P.D. episode "Hit Me".
He was portrayed by Erik Jensen, who also portrayed James Turner in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
Background[]
Not much is known of him, other than he has a wife and daughter both of whom he was close with. When he was starting out as a cop, he was good friends with Trudy Platt at another police district before she transferred. He was soon promoted to Detective, working in robberies department.
At some point, he got shot in the back on duty but survived though the bullet was lodged into his spine, and he was forced to undergo surgery. Over time, he regained his mobility and was put on desk duty. As a result of his medical expenses, he came into financial trouble and his salary was unable to cover it. In his desperation, he saw there was more to be gain in crime, so he recruited criminals he previously arrested Bug and Franklin Haynes into helping him in him. He would supply them with police uniforms, cars, and give them badges of other cops to help them masquerade as cops. However, on one night, Franklin Haynes, who served as the lookout of a casino winner Kristie Bradford. After she left the casino, Bug pulled her over and asked her to exit the vehicle. At first, he was polite but soon got violent and viciously attacked the woman with his gun when robbing her, leaving her battered and traumatized. Despite him threatening her life, Bradford later reported this to the 21st District. Watts would volunteer to investigate the cases, so as to cover his tracks.
Hit Me[]
He is first seen entering the 21st district, reuniting with Trudy and would recount on the past, before he goes to speak with Sgt. Hank Voight. He takes part in the conference between Voight and Deputy Crowley, being upset Intelligence didn't volunteer to hand over info on the investigation. This was his way to snuff out what they knew in the case, so as to cover his tracks. On the deputy's order, he is forced to work with Intelligence to dismantle the crew of fake cops.
Eventually, they found Haynes murdered by Bug who is soon detained with another accomplice. While in holding, Bug gives up Watts as the mastermind of the plan to Voight. This caused Intelligence to go over the case, noting Watts only agreed to help to keep an eye on his robbery spree and divert any attention away from him. They also discovered he arrested Howard and Haynes before hiring them to work with him. Searching his home, they learned from his wife that he wasn't around but discovered his stash of money and learned he was armed with his shotgun.
Having realized it was a matter of time before he was caught, Watts said goodbye to his family before he went on the run and hid in a rented trailer. He hunkered down until the police swarmed the area and he awaited confrontation by arming himself with a shotgun and awaited them. However, Trudy arrived to speak with him and put her weapon down to prove it.
Holding her at gunpoint, Watts told her that he won't allow himself to be detained, and she asked him how they got to this point. Watts soon revealed to her of his reason for the robberies and declared he was owed more than what he deserved, as he was good at his job. Trudy was able to relate because of her own injury from being shot and stated though she wanted to be in the field as a cop, she loved her position as a desk Sergeant since she can run the building from there. Through tears, Watts voices how she was fortunate, but he wasn't and aims at the shotgun at her, stating there was no coming back for him because he succumbed to crime.
He tells her that he was the orchestrator of all the robberies, but he couldn't shut it down after falling into deep once Howard got more ambitious and greedier. Watts breaks down in guilt at the assault of a woman and murder of a man, before he takes the gun and positions it at his head, as Trudy pleads to him to keep calm. She tells him to think of his family, how they would be lost without him around. After breaking down, he empties the gun and tells Trudy to get him a new bottle of booze. Before doing so, Trudy asks for his remaining weapon, and he surrenders. Trudy escorts him out in cuffs, before handing him over to Antonio Dawson. Watts apologizes for his crimes, but Antonio tells him that he's getting him out of the area, so the media won't catch him.
He is then incarcerated for the robberies, accessory to assault, and murder.
Murders Connected to Martin Watts[]
Franklin Haynes - Shot in the head by Clayton Howard which is Martin Watts fault as he played a big part in the robberies, and he was the one who gave Franklin Haynes and Clayton Howard all the cop stuff.
