~ Mary, angry at being abandoned by Jack Smith, disowns the future Jack the Ripper as her son.

Mary is a minor antagonist in the manga/anime series Record of Ragnarok.

She is the main antagonist of Jack the Ripper's Flashback during the Fourth Round of the Ragnarok Tournament.

Mary is a prostitute in a London brothel who, believing the promise of her client, Jack Smith, that he would come back for her after he was successful as a playwright, raised their son, the future Jack the Ripper, as a vessel for the promise.

She is voiced by Naoko Komatsu in the Japanese dubbed version of the anime adaptation. She is voiced by Victoria Atkin in the English dub.

Appearance[]

Mary is a beautiful young woman with long blond hair that falls to her hips. She wears a simple white dress with some purple streaks. Despite her apparent youth, Mary is described as "aged" by Anne and one of her clients, meaning she is older than she appears.

Personality[]

Mary initially comes off as a kind and caring person, as she put her son's well-being before her own despite being beaten, insulted, and underpaid. Only after Jack Smith doesn't keep his promise does Mary show her true nature: she doesn't care about anyone but herself, to the point of telling her son that she would rather have an abortion rather than having it. Despite the cruelty of her words, it is likely that this selfishness arose from the hardships and suffering Mary endured as a prostitute and from her desire to escape from that situation.

Biography[]

Mary is a London brothel prostitute who, after being pregnant five times by some of her clients, miscarries all five times. However, after spending the night with a client named Jack Smith, he promises to come back for her after he becomes successful as a playwright. Mary believes his promises and decides to keep the child of their relationship: the future Jack the Ripper.

For the next fifteen years Mary remains at the brothel to raise her son with love and dedication, in the hope that Jack Smith will keep his promise. However, one day she discovers from the newspapers that the man, after having had success as a playwright, has married a noblewoman and consequently has not kept his promise, throwing her into despair. In a fit of rage, Mary disowns the future Jack the Ripper as a son, arguing that he had better have an abortion, and the child sees in his mother the color of hatred towards him.

Trying to drive away that color, the child chokes Mary trying to suffocate her, thus generating the color of fear that attracts his attention. After she frees herself from his grip, the future Jack the Ripper kills Mary by stabbing her in the neck, thus generating the color of death to which she becomes addicted from then on.

Powers and Abilities[]

Beauty, Charm and Seduction: Mary is considered a beautiful woman even by the standards of London prostitutes, to the point that even Anne herself complains that clients engage more with her than with other prostitutes of the brothel. She has enough charm and seductive technique to entertain men, even if sometimes they don't pay her due.

Trivia[]

  • Two of Jack the Ripper's five confirmed victims in real life are named "Mary", so it is likely that Jack the Ripper's mother in the Record of Ragnarok series was inspired by his two real victims.
