~ Mary after infecting Stack. |
Mary is a major antagonist in the 2025 period action horror film Sinners.
She is Stack's ex-girlfriend and a visitor at the Smokestack Juke Joint who had a grudge against him due to leaving her without saying goodbye, eventually she was bit and turned into a vampire by the vampire Remmick.
She was portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld.
Biography[]
Mary is the daughter of a Caucasian man and a mixed-race (3/4th white, 1/4th black) woman, possibly out of affair, making her a mixed-race person. However, it is implied that her father left her because he's ashamed that anyone would find out about his interracial relationship with a mixed-race woman. Despite that, her white genes are more dominant on her phenotype, making her viewed and treated more as a Caucasian by the Jim Crow laws. Because of this, she can be friends and get along with white women around her. She got into a relationship with Stack, but he left her when he got drafted for World War 1. Since then, she never heard of him ever again, even when Stack and his brother Smoke returned from the war and went to Chicago. At some point, her mother died days before Stack and Smoke returned to their hometown.
She later reunited with Stack in a train station. She still hold grudges at him for ghosting her for years and came back without telling her whatsoever. Despite her begging Stack to reconcile, he still seems adamant and tells her that he doesn't want to see her again.
Mary then shows up at the opening night of the Smokestack Juke Joint. At first, the patrons there looked at her suspiciously, still considering her as a white woman, but then Cornbread, her childhood friend allowed her to go inside and join the party. Mary then had a talk with Stack's cousin, Sammie, and tells him about how her grandfather was half black. Sammie then tells her to get out so that she wouldn't cause a commotion with Stack, but she refuses to go, saying that she wants to hear him sing.
Mary and Stack then dances together while Sammie sings his song, when suddenly a man named Remmick alongside his companions, Joan and Bert, arrive and ask to join the party. Smoke refuses since they're not black, despite Remmick begging them and convinces them that he has money.
Mary then goes out and talks to Remmick to procure his money. Remmick tells her that he knows who she is and understand how it feels to be misjudged for their true self. He then uses Mary's grief after losing her mother to manipulate her. She then excuses herself to go back inside, where Remmick jumps out on her and bites her, turning her into a vampire.
After that, she returns to the club, her charming nature draws no suspicion from Cornbread or anyone there. She then starts seducing Stack and takes him inside the storage shack to have sex. Stack, overflowed with the sexual pleasure, unaware that Mary already turned into a vampire. When Smoke tries to look after his brother to talk to him, he hears Mary's moaning sounds from inside the shack. As he opened the door, he finds Stacks bleeding with Mary chewing on his neck. Smoke then shoots Mary multiple times until his gun runs dry, but it doesn't affect her at all. Mary then escapes from the shack, leaving Stack's body in there.
After Stack got turned into a vampire, he and Mary joined Remmick's band of vampires and killing multiple people including townsfolk and field workers, turning them into vampires. Smoke and the survivors sees them dancing to Irish folk music sang by Remmick before they eventually attack everyone in the club. She bites Annie but before she can turn, Smoke stabs Annie to death. Mary is horrified and attempts to attack Smoke, only to be held off by Stack.
Years later in 1992, she and Stack actually survived that night after Smoke spared Stack's life and told him to go before sunrise. It is unclear how and when Mary escaped, but now she's visiting Sammie, who grow old and become a successful musician. Thanks to the vampirism, Stack and Mary's bodies remain youthful. She offers Sammie to become just like them, but he refuses, leading to them searching for their next victims.
