Mary Epps is the secondary antagonist of the 2013 film 12 Years a Slave. She is the wife of main antagonist Edwin Epps.

She is portrayed by Sarah Paulson, who also portrayed Sally McKenna in American Horror Story.

Personality

Like her husband, Mary is a racist who believes that the slaves on their plantation are subhuman, and so treats them with cruelty and contempt. She is also pathologically jealous of her husband, who has a habit of sleeping with (or raping) attractive female slaves. She blames his victims themselves for his actions, having convinced herself that they "seduced" him.

Past

At some point of her life, Mary married a man named Edwin Epps, the couple never had children.

Role in film

Mary abuses and degrades Edwin's latest victim, an African woman named Patsy, because she is jeaous of his infatuation with her. Mary takes pleasure in making Patsy's life a living hell, going so far as to force Edwin to whip Patsy for no reason until the poor woman's back is horribly disfigured.

Near the end of the film, she is briefly seen watching the film's protagonistt, a slave named Northup, being rescued and freed; she is angered and offended by this, but can do nothing about it.
