Sept. 5, 1976. Sleeping very little now... hear strange noises at night. I know it's the boy, prowling the mansion... he's grown so. Tall, strong. I've come to fear him. Fear some terrible retribution that cunning mind is conjuring for me. Should have left the baby for dead as his grandmother wanted... should of never have tried to raise Jonathan alone...
~ An journal entry Mary Keeny wrote shortly before her death.
Filth. Sooo like your mother, aren't you? I believe it may be time we paid the chapel a visit, my literary young friend. Kindly dress for the occasion. You know which suit!
~ Mary Keeny to Jonathan after finding a book by James Joyce under his bed.

Mary Keeny is a minor posthumous villain from DC Comics debuting and only appearing in the 2005 two-parter miniseries Year One: Batman/Scarecrow. She was the great-grandmother of Jonathan Crane also known as Scarecrow who in the "Post-Crisis / New Earth" continuity of DC Comics was the cause of his obsession with fear.

History[]

Mary Keeny's past is mostly unknown outside the fact that she was the matriarch of the financially-well Keeny family. Her grandfather and her mother used to have a farm and chapel in Southern Georgia's fields, which was considered magnificent, but when the Wall Street Crash happened, Mary's grandfather blew his brains out at the farm's fruit cellar and Mary's mother hanged herself, leaving the chapel to decay. At some point in her life, Mary mothered a daughter, whom she named Marion. She later became a grandmother with the arrival of Marion's daughter Karen. However, Marion and Karen somehow squandered what remained of the family fortune, much to Mary's anger, with only the abandoned farm being all she had left. During her adolescence, much to her mother's and grandmother's disapproval, Karen was impregnated by a Gothamite young man called Gerald Crane, who ran away from any paternal responsibilities.

Months later, Karen gave birth to a son, assisted by Mary in delivering the boy, whom Mary named Jonathan due to that being the name she wished had she sired a boy. Although Marion suggested to bury her daughter's bastard son to prevent them from ruining the no longer prestigious Keeny family name, Mary insisted to spare the Jonathan, taking the newborn away from Karen and Marion and deciding to raise the infant at her farm. From that day onwards, she would raise the kid but not out of love instead merely to vent her sadistic tendencies. She would force her great grandson to work in the cornfield every day he wasn't in school and if he did anything she disapproved of, Mary forced young Jonathan into the old family chapel where he would be attacked by crows that lived there every night. As Jonathan was being attacked, she'd merely lock the door to trap him inside while she would sing outside the chapel.

Jonathan would decide to investigate to see why the crows always attacked him only to find out that she would use some chemical, herbs and rats that she would squeeze their blood on the clothing that would drive the crows insane. After draining the blood from the rats, she would place the remains on the family scarecrow, leading entire flocks to sic on the cornfield's scarecrow. As a young teenager Jonathan grew angry and plotted revenge, Mary started to fear would be the end of her, ultimately she was killed not long after with the same chemicals she used on Jonathan who decided to lock her in the same chapel where she was killed by the same flock of crows she used to attack him. Her cruelty would cause Jonathan to become obsessed with fear to the point he would kill his grandmother, Marion Keeny, and plot to kill both his parents out of hatred for what she put him through.

Appearance[]

Mary Keeny was a frail and rather skinny elderly woman with white hair. She always seemed to wear her hair in a bun and wore an old fashioned black dress.

Personality[]

Fortunately, Great Grandmother Keeny didn't take her daughter's advice. Not out of pity, you understand--she detested the baby as much as Grandmother Marion. Nor from any embarrassment to the Keeny name. Both daughter and granddaughter had squandered that years ago. Leaving the old woman to decay in an antebellum mausoleum she had neither the money nor strength to maintain. She did maintain the child, however. "Maintain", I said--not "Love"--perhaps to spite her selfish daughter... perhaps to assuage her own dark needs.
~ Jonathan Crane to Professor Pigeon.

Mary Keeny is a petty and self-righteous religious fanatic who took pleasure in tormenting her granddaughter and great-grandson, seeing them both as irredeemable sinners whose very existence was an offense to God. When Marion suggested they kill Jonathan as an infant Mary Keeny refused, but not out of pity or to prevent any further embarrassment to the already disgraced family. As Jonathan put it, Mary accepted to maintain him, not to love him due to seeing him as an easy target for abuse later and free labor for her, given she was too weak to do much of the farm work, delighting herself in seeing the child under her care young and frail body laboring under Georgia's roaring sun and biting flies.

She would regularly berate Jonathan even calling him a pervert when she found a book by James Joyce under his bed and a trickster for wanting to celebrate Halloween, whom she regarded as the "Devil's Holiday", in which all hoodlum kids dressed like his minions to parade dark streets, scare people and vandalize houses. Near the end of her life she admitted in her journals she feared Jonathan due to him becoming stronger and bolder, she would state that she regretted not taking her daughter's advice on killing him as an infant and that she feared Jonathan would eventually take retribution if he ever found out about how she made the crows attack him.
