Masaru Sera is one of the overarching protagonists in the Like a Dragon (Ryū ga Gotoku, formerly known as Yakuza in the west) franchise. He is one of the overarching protagonists of the Yakuza Saga.

He is a major character in Yakuza 0 (specifically the tritagonist of Majima's scenario and a major character of Kiryu's scenario) and one of the three overarching protagonists (alongside Shintaro Kazama and Yumi Sawamura) in Yakuza and its remake Yakuza Kiwami

Sera is the patriarch of the Nikkyo Consortium, a high ranking faction in the Tojo Clan, the most influential Yakuza in Eastern Japan and a close friend of Shintaro Kazama. In Yakuza 0, Sera is apart of Kazama's plan to prevent Sohei Dojima becoming the chairman of the Tojo Clan by getting Sera to take the position instead. In the end, Sera succeeds at this and becomes the third chairman of the Tojo Clan.

In Yakuza and Yakuza Kiwami, Sera is an associate of Kyohei Jingu and assists him in his attempt to become the Prime Minister of Japan. Ultimately, however, Sera betrays Jingu and helps Kazama and Yumi to stop Jingu, though he is killed by an unknown assailant before he can see the plan come to fruition. Despite his demise, his actions impacted the series as he allowed Kazama to choose the next successor to become the fourth chairman of the Tojo Clan, which would eventually be Kazuma Kiryu.

Biography[]

Yakuza 0[]

When Goro Majima and Makoto are confronted by Tsukasa Sagawa who attempts to kill them Sera shoots Sagawa in the leg from behind and takes Makoto away. When Majima - injured by the explosion of a car bomb Sagawa had detonated - grabs Sera's leg and asks him who he is, Sera knocks him out by hitting him with his pistol, then manages to escape.

Majima finds the Nikkyo Consortium's base and breaks through its defences to find Sera. Majima demands to know where Makoto is to which Sera responds that he will tell him if he can defeat him in a fight. Majima and Sera brawl with the former being the victor.

Sera reveals to Majima that Makoto is in the possession of a real estate company in Kamurocho and advises Majima to stay in Sotenbori and keep working under Sagawa's orders to keep him away from Makoto. Sera tells Majima that he has the name of the real estate agent who has taken Makoto in his coat pocket. He then gives Majima a gun and says that if he does not trust him to keep Makoto safe he may kill him and take the card out of his pocket. Majima contemplates killing Sera but ultimately chooses not to. Sera is then shot in the leg from behind by Sagawa, and is left injured for the rest of the game.

As Majima is crying over Makoto's unconscious in the Dojima Family HQ Sera and the Nikkyo Consortium turn up and take Majima and Makoto to a hospital. Sera informs Majima that he and the Nikkyo Consortium will be taking Makoto to a ship at the Shibuara Wharf where they will hide as the Dojima Family has decided to try and kill everybody affiliated with the Consortium. He offers Majima to join them to which Majima refuses and says he will go and kill Dojima to prevent him killing Makoto. Sera warns Majima not to but he chooses to anyway.

Sera visits Kiryu in Little Asia to inform him that Tachibana's plans for once he got the empty lot was to sell it to Sera and thus he could sell it and make a lot of money and be able to rival Sohei Dojima's claim to the Tojo Clan chairman position. He then tells Kiryu to go into hiding as the Dojima Family's raid on Kamurocho has him as one of the many targets.

After Majima defeats Lao Gui at the end of the game and prepares to kill him and Dojima, Dojima takes out a gun and tries to murder Majima. Sera turns up just in time and shoots the gun out of Dojima's hands.

Sera persuades Majima not to kill Lao Gui or Dojima stating that it would upset Makoto to know he killed people on her behalf.

Sera reveals that Makoto regained conciousness and sold the empty lot to him much to Dojima's horror.

Sera takes Lao Gui captive as he had commited many crimes under Dojima's order including murder and abduction and could have Dojima arrested if he were to testify to the police. Sera uses this leverage to blackmail Dojima into telling the acting chairman of the Tojo Clan to make Sera his heir.

Yakuza/Yakuza Kiwami[]

After Kazuma Kiryu is convicted of murdering Sohei Dojima, Sera elected to have him expelled from the Tojo Clan. During Kiryu's sentence, Sera sent multiple prisoners to attack Kiryu to test his strength, though Kiryu successfully defended himself.

Sera allies with Kyohei Jingu, a politician to help him become the authotarian leader of Japan.

Jingu phones Sera and tells him he has accidentally killed a journalist and needs his help to cover up the body. Sera and Jingu burry the body in a wood. Jingu then requests Sera to murder his ex wife Yumi Sawamura and their daughter Haruka Sawamura to prevent a public scandal coming to him for abbandoning them.

Sera and an assassin break into Kazama's house where Yumi is staying and the assassin finds Yumi and Haruka in bed and attempts to murder them. Kazama turns up, shoots and kills the assassin before they can.

Kazama persuades Sera to no longer help Jingu and side with him and Yumi in preventing him succeeding.

Sera, Kazama and Yumi steal ten billion yen that had been laundered by Jingu in the Tojo Clan to help him rise to power.

In a meeting at the Yakuza headquarters between Sera and the patriachs of all the fractions in the organisation Akira Nishikiyama questions Sera about whether or not it is true that all ten billion yen the Tojo Clan owned had been stolen. Sera ended the meeting and announced that he would look into it. Nishiki grins at Kazama after Sera had left, delighted over the friction he caused.

Sera is murdered during his investigation and Kiryu and Kazama attend his expensive funeral. It is unknown who directly killed Sera or how it happened, only that he did die. Most people later suspected that it was Nishiki who killed Sera.
