~ The Front Man revealing the consequences of the Masked Men removing their masks in front of the contestants. |
The Masked Men, also called Staff or Pink Soldiers, are the main antagonists of the South Korean Netflix series Squid Game. They are a shadowy organization of figures, who are responsible for overseeing the game, and wear pink hoods and featureless black masks to conceal their identities.
Each mask has either a square, a circle or a triangle to denote the individual's rank. They are led by a mysterious figure known only as the Front Man, who acts as the overseer of the game.
Hierarchy[]
The Host[]
The Host is the creator of the Squid Game and isn't part of the masked men ranks, but he has the power to command all of them, including the Front Man. This is a title that lurks over the game and has more power of any member of the masked men.
Front Man[]
As the administrator and overseer of Squid Game, the Front Man directly commands all of the masked men. No soldiers can take an action that is outside of their duty without his command.
Masked Managers (Square)[]
They act as the administrators for each game and give orders to the Masked Soldiers and Workers. Their duty is to explain the rules of the game and ensure everyone stays in line, including the other Masked Men. While they normally leave the violence to the Masked Soldiers, they typically carry a revolver at all times if they need to dish out a punishment personally. They are above Circle and Triangle.
Masked Soldiers (Triangle)[]
They act as enforcers for the game. Their duty is to shoot anyone who fails or cheats at the game, or does something else to break the rules. They carry firearms such as rifles or revolvers. They are ranked higher than Masked Workers, but below Masked Managers.
Masked Workers (Circle)[]
Their duty is to ensure the game runs smoothly and to handle the menial and laborious tasks related to each game, such as setting up props or transporting out dead bodies and incinerating them.
Personality[]
They are always calm and unmoved when seeing any event (although it is likely because of the masks hiding their emotions). They seem to be very into the ideology that the game is giving the contestants "an opportunity in their life". They will execute any losers of the games without mercy. Though mostly stoic, they don't tolerate when the players get confrontational with or irritate them, having threatened several of the players with firearms outside of the games for actions such as begging to be released and complaining about food distribution.
Trivia[]
- The shapes on the masks are the same as the shapes that compose the squid-shaped court in the Squid Game. The square, triangle, and circle also appear on the invitation cards from right to left respectively, which is the hierarchical order of the masked men.
- The shapes also make up the Hangul characters that spell out the show's Korean title, 오징어 게임 (Ojingeo Geim).
- The symbols on the guards' mask also resembles the buttons on a PlayStation controller, excluding the X.
- Interestingly, the number of corners on the shapes indicate the hierarchy of the guards, with Masked Managers having the most corners—being four, Masked Soldiers possessing three corners, and Masked Workers having none at all.
- Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director of the series, explained that he was inspired by the work of ants to create the masked men, as there are working level ants which are given one purpose and role.[1]
- Over the course of season one, two soldiers, two workers, and two managers are known to have died during the 33rd Squid Game.
