The Masked Monsters (仮面怪人, Kamen Kaijin) are the agents of the Black Cross Army terrorist organization and the "monsters of the week" in Himitsu Sentai Gorenger.

History

Past

Being an alien who came to Earth an unknown amount of time ago, the Black Cross Führer founded the Black Cross Army to facilitate his takeover of the Earth. The Führer gathered a coalition of despots, warlords and criminal gangs to form the most powerful paramilitary organization with the goal of conquering the world. As such, Golden Mask was created as a cyborg to serve the Black Cross Army as its muscle.

The Masked Monsters were responsible for carrying out field missions and each wore a unique mask representing their motif and special abilities. Although many Masked Monsters stayed with the main Black Cross branch in Japan, many more joined Black Cross generals and became part of specialized groups; namely the Africa division under Sun Halo Mask, the Steel Brigade of Iron Man Mask General Temujin and the Eruption Battalion under Volcano Mask General Magman.

Gorenger

After the United Nations forms EAGLE to oppose the Black Cross Army, the Black Cross Führer sends and five Masked Monsters to lead battalions of Zolders in assaulting EAGLE bases and massacring everyone inside. Believing EAGLE to be neutralised, the Führer announces the next stage of the Black Cross Army's worldwide operation to the Masked Monsters and Zolers. Gold Mask and his Zolders kidnap a bus full of kindergarteners and use them as hostages to steal gunpowder. However, they are killed by the newly formed Himitsu Sentai Gorenger; comprised of the five sole survivors of the Masked Monsters' rampage. With that, the Fuhrer begins sending Masked Monsters to destroy them and the Earth in assortment of ways.

After the death of Skull Mask, Sun Halo Mask is summoned to Japan by the Black Cross Fuhrer and arrives in time to take command of the Black Cross' attacks due to the repeated failures of independent Masked Monsters. Despite the successes with Rainbow Mask and several Africa Division Masked Monsters, Sun Halo Mask is a repeated failure and eventually killed so the Black Cross Führer summons Iron Man Mask General Temujin and his Steel Battalion from the Gobi Desert.

Trivia

• The Masked Monsters are the first Sentai monsters of the Shōwa era as well as the first monsters in Super Sentai history. They would go on to be homaged by the Jamenshis in Mashin Sentai Kiramager forty-five years later (2020).
