| “ | The very first time I went to see you, you were lying in your bed in that dusty old hospital, just staring up at the ceiling like a zombie. I couldn't believe you killed the team pursuing you with one rifle and got past the fences at the Demarcation Line without any kind of help at all. I saw you in that bed and felt sorry for you. So I decided to give you a chance to start over. | „ |

| ~ The Masked Officer justifying his organ trafficking operation to Kang No-eul |
The Masked Officer, also simply known as the Officer, is the secondary antagonist of Netflix's K-drama Squid Game.
The Masked Officer is a high-ranking official of the Squid Game and is the second-in-command of the Masked Men who serves directly under the Front Man. He is the arch-nemesis of Kang No-eul.
The Officer serves as the Front Man's temporary replacement when the latter joins the games as "Oh Young-il" in order to subvert Seong Gi-hun's plan to dismantle the Squid Games. He is also the ringleader of the Organ Trafficking Conspiracy, having restarted the operation during the 37th Squid Game in order to accumulate additional profits from selling organs in the black market.
He is portrayed by Park Hee-soon, who also played Choi Mu-jin in My Name.
Personality[]
The Masked Officer is shown to be stern and strict. He takes the work done by the guards very seriously, but he is also a greedy opportunist, making sure the Organ Trafficking Conspiracy is happening under the wraps. He is shown to be composed even in anger, as seen when he scolds Kang No-eul for continuing to interfere with the organ trafficking conspiracy's plans. His full motivations are yet to be revealed. However, as stated by No-eul, his intentions have changed over the course of time.
It’s eventually revealed that similar to the Front Man, he lost the person he loved most, because he couldn’t afford a kidney. This is part of the reason he leads the organization harvesting program to “save others”. He’s initially willing to forgive No-eul after she kills the organ harvesters but this changes upon him discovering that she lied and actually killed the doctor.
Biography[]
The Backrooms (Found Footage)[]
Before Squid Game season 2, Masked Officer makes it first appearance in "The Backrooms (Found Footage)" video.
After the cameraman escapes from Masked Men and keep searching the place, they found the place where Mingle game takes place and mysteriously the curtain that functions as a door if the game takes places opens and then the rooms lights also opens. While the cameraman tries to understand what is going on, they hear walking sounds, turns their head and meets with Masked Officer and footage ends.
Squid Game[]
In Squid Game Season 2, the Masked Officer first appears in Episode 3 in the Front Man's control room while the latter is away playing the game disguised as "Oh Young-il". The Officer instructs the Masked Managers to start the game, resulting in 91 players being eliminated.
Later, the Officer is on the phone with several Masked Soldiers discussing the organ trafficking conspiracy that ended three years ago due to Byeong-gi's death. During the call, one of the soldiers mentions Number 011 shooting multiple bodies, making them worthless for harvesting.
The Officer summons Number 11 and criticizes her for interfering with the organ trafficking efforts, reminding her of their meeting seven years ago after she eliminated her pursuit unit and crossed the demarcation line by herself, as well as how he offered her employment upon feeling sympathy for her miserable state in the hospital. However, while she expresses gratitude for his actions, Number 11 remains adamant in her opposition to the organ trafficking efforts despite the Officer attempting to assure her of the Front Man being unable to discover the illicit operation. The Officer then accuses Number 11 of having a change of heart by disobeying his orders despite having promised to do anything he asked of her, while implying that he gave Number 11 a second chance at finding her daughter. In response, Number 11 states how the Officer had originally said that her job was to help put those who were hopeless out of their misery before telling him that he was the one who had changed. After the Officer attempts to justify his actions by claiming that he and his conspirators were using the harvested organs to save others, Number 11 asks to be excused if there were no further orders for her to follow.
The next day, the Officer oversees the Mingle game, where players must form teams of a specific size and enter one of 50 doors. Anyone not in a door is eliminated, resulting in at least 155 deaths.
Later, the Officer initiates the Special game, but things go awry when Seong Gi-hun and the others decide to rebel against the organization. They manage to seize guns and kill multiple soldiers. The Officer orders all guards to evacuate, but one of the Masked Managers is forced by Gi-hun to reveal the way upstairs.
The Officer quickly orders all troops to prepare for battle. While fighting rages on the staircase, the Officer remains locked in the control room with an estimated count of 30 Masked Men. He orders them to seize control of the dormitories while Gi-hun and Park Jung-bae engage in combat with guards.
Finally, "Oh Young-il" reveals himself as the Front Man. He, the Officer, and several Masked Managers corner Gi-hun and Jung-bae. The Front Man shoots the latter, and the Managers push Gi-hun down. The Front Man and the Officer then walk away, leaving the season on a cliffhanger.
In Squid Game Season 3, The Officer lets the Front Man know that 8 managers and 27 soldiers were killed in rebellion. The Front Man then tells him to replace the dead soldiers with workers as a promotion, and to repair any damage to the facility as quickly as possible, since the VIPs will be arriving soon. the next day after overseeing the hide and seek game where 35 players are eliminated, he then goes to VIP room to serve the VIPs and the Front Man. He then hears from Manager 004 that they lost the connection to the operating room to which he inquires about the situation in the operating room where the manager informs him that several soldiers are dead. The Manager tells him that the suspected one in Soldier 16 (who unbeknownst to both of them is Park Gyeong-seok in disguise) as his body was missing. The Officer than checks the control room to see which soldiers are not yet in their rooms and finds Soldier 016 (who he still doesn't know is Gyeong-seok in disguise) there. He later orders one of the soldiers to bring Soldier 16 to him when the lights are out. He is also to find out where Soldier 11 is. But No-eul is already behind him in his room. He asks her if she is responsible for the deaths in the operating room, which she confirms. He asks her why she is risking her life to save “scum” who will die anyway. She says that it is his life that is in danger. She demands that he let her and Soldier 16 patrol the outer compound the next day and provide her with a boat. When he tells her that they will not get out of there alive, she points to the arrival of the VIPs and says that it would also be to his advantage if they left without causing a stir.
The next day he sends a key in No-eul's food. He does not believe her that it is Soldier 16 with whom she wants to escape and orders a manager to search the operating room again. In doing so, he discovers that Soldier 16 is lying on the operating table instead of a participant. He also finds out that he is wearing the clothes of player 246 and that Player 246 is Soldier 16 in disguise and the announcer announces that soldiers 10-20 are to check the outside area. After Overseeing the Jump Rope he does not intervene, even though now he knows that Gyeong-seok is Soldier 016 in disguise when he and other soldiers begin patrolling the outer compound. However, he sends a pursuit team after them. At first, Gyeong-seok and No-eul manage to escape in a motorboat. Then the Officer contacts No-eul by radio. He wants her to bring Gyeong-seok back and makes it clear that he knows he is the father of the sick little girl. No-eul turns the boat around and returns to the island, but leaves Gyeong-seok behind and advises him to head for the mainland at full speed. The masked officer orders his soldiers to kill both of them. No-eul re-enters the compound through an exhaust vent. She then penetrates deeper into the facility through the ventilation shafts, while Gyeong-seok continues to evade his pursuers on the motorboat and then climbs into the Officer's quarters and demands at gunpoint that he delete all entries for player number 246 (Gyeong-seok) from the server. He does so, but points out that there is another entry in the leader's private quarters, which she can only access with him. In the elevator on the way there He gets in a brawl in No-eul which continues even after they reach the Front Man’s office. He gains the upper hand when he leaves No-eul without her rifle and begins to strangle her, still wondering why is she defying him and telling her he knows based on the records, both her and Gyeong-seok worked together at Seoul Land before asking if No-eul has a crush on Gyeong-seok or something. She reveals that his daughter will die if her father does. He then begins to realize that No-eul did it since the welfare of Na-yeon depended on it, then nitpicks at her if caring for another child makes No-eul feel better over abandoning her own. Weakened, she begs him to let those two go. The Officer then pulls out a pocket knife, saying while he understands to a certain extent, she crossed a line and she can’t go back now. She gathers enough strength to push back and attempts to stab him, yet it isn’t enough; he pushes her off him and they trade blows before he knocks the blade out of her hand and smashes a glass on her head. He expresses further disappointment in her, hoping there was a mutual understanding since they both defected North Korea and knowing what it was like to lose a loved one. He goes more in depth about his loss and stabs No-eul, wounding her deeply.
No-eul then starts to slide away as The Officer is notified the final games are about to begin, then he verbally attacks her again; having regrets that he was wrong about her and further regrets not throwing her away in the games like the rest of the “trash,” then accusing that she chose herself over her daughter out of selfishness before preaching that she needs to stop worrying about someone else's child and worry about seeing hers in the afterlife. He promises that her death will be painless and grabs the bloodied knife, taunting her the closer she gets to the elevator. No-eul presses the button and he soon realizes she was after her rifle and while he attempts to stop her, she fires it; killing him instantly, freeing Gyeong-seok and Na-yeon from The Officer's danger forever. His body was incinerated when the island was blown up.

Quotes[]
| “ | Masked Officer: I told you not to interfere if you're not going to help. I hear you shot them a second time to make sure they died. Kang No-eul: I was just doing my job. Masked Officer: How long... have we known each other? Kang No-eul: I don't quite remember. Masked Officer: If I remember correctly... it's been about seven years. When I first came to see you, you were staring at the ceiling like a corpse in that cheap hospital room. I couldn't believe you had taken out the entire pursuit unit and made your way to the Demarcation Line by yourself. I felt bad for you. I wanted to give you a second chance. Kang No-eul: I've always been grateful to you. Masked Officer: Then do what I tell you to. Kang No-eul: I do not wish to. |

| “ | Masked Officer: Are you afraid the captain might find out? You don't have to worry about that. We made a mistake last time and had a player do the operations in exchange for game info. This time, we hired a doctor from outside. So he will never find out, and even if he does— Kang No-eul: It's not about that. Masked Officer: THEN WHAT IS IT ABOUT?! When we first met, you said you wanted to find the child you left behind. You said you'd do anything. Did you have a change of heart? Kang No-eul: When you first came to me, you said my job here would be helping those who feel hopeless by putting them out of their misery. I trusted you. That's what I came here to do. You're the one who has changed. Masked Officer: Those people are going to die anyway. We're just using their organs to save others. What's wrong with that? Kang No-eul: If there are no further orders, I'd like to be excused. |

Trivia[]
- The Officer's position did not appear in Season 1 during the 2020 games, but he is aware of the problem with Byeong-gi that year, and hired No-eul in 2020, so he likely was the Front Man's right-hand before 2024.
- Unlike Oh Il-nam and the Front Man, the Masked Officer is the only member of the leadership of the game to be nameless.
- He's also the only one to be killed (being shot by No-eul), as Il-nam died from natural causes and the Front Man is still alive, though Gi-hun was going to kill the former before.
- People commented under the movie teaser of the upcoming movie No Other Choice "Front Man and Masked Officer's job after blowing up the island" due to this movie starring Park Hee-soon and Lee Byung-hun (Front Man's actor).
- Prior to becoming the Masked Officer, it's possible that he was a Recruiter before The Salesman and a member of Fishing Group before 34th Squid Game.
- Park Hee-soon previously appeared in a movie called The Fortress. The movie also starred Lee Byung-hun (Front Man's actor), Lee David (Park Min-su's actor), Heo Sung-tae (Jang Deok-su's actor) and Song Young-chang (Im Jeong-dae's actor).
