“ | Masoj Hun'ett of House Hun'ett, beginning my thirtieth and final year of study. Soon I will be recognized as a full wizard of Menzoberranzan, with all the privileges accorded my station. | „ |
~ Masoj introducing himself. |
“ | Because I want him dead! I want to tear the life from Drizzt Do'Urden! When he is dead, I want to rip out his heart and display it as a trophy! | „ |
~ Masoj expressing his hatred of Drizzt. |
Masoj Hun'ett is a minor antagonist of R.A Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt, serving as a major antagonist of The Dark Elf Trilogy. He is a drow wizard and a member of House Hun'ett, who made an alliance with another drow named Alton DeVir, to destroy the house that destroyed Alton's house. Upon discovering that that house is House Do'urden, Masoj became obsessed with killing their youngest boy, Drizzt. Masoj was killed in battle with Drizzt during the beginning of the war between Do'urden and Hun'ett. He was the son of SiNafay Hun'ett, the brother of Gelroos Hun'ett, and the previous owner of Guenhwyvar.
Appearance[]
Masoj was a fairly short but otherwise average looking drow. The only oddity was his lack of eyebrows, which Alton accidentally burned off.
Personality[]
Masoj was an extremely arrogant person, who considered himself more skilled than anyone else. He would be outraged by anyone who he believed superior to himself and would do whatever he could to bring them down. Despite this, he was capable of feigning humility, if need be, and could be very manipulative. He was quite intelligent as well.
Masoj also had a streak of sadism, and enjoyed causing pain to others whenever he could. This sadism was evident in his sense of humor, which was extremely sardonic and sarcastic.
Biography[]
Apprentice to Gelroos[]
“ | Four years I have slaved to him, that back-end of a carrion crawler. Cleaned his boots. Prepared salve for his disgusting face! Was it ever enough? Not for that one. | „ |
~ Masoj on his time with Gelroos. |
Masoj was born as a noble of House Hun'ett and was apprenticed to his brother Gelroos before he was old enough to attend the Sorcere. During the apprenticeship, Masoj grew to hate Gelroos, complaining that all the older mage did was boss him around. At some point, Masoj summoned a fiend, who gave him a figurine that gave him control over the astral panther Guenhwyvar. However, Gelroos took credit of this feat and took the panther for himself.
When Masoj was 24, the Gelroos invited a student from the Sorcere named Alton Devir to his tower before attempting to kill him. Masoj was cleaning the tower at the time and witnessed the battle, before deciding to end his apprenticeship once and for all, by murdering Gelroos while he was distracted with Alton. Masoj planned to kill Alton too, but Alton offered to prevent people from looking into the crime by pretending to be the Gelroos. He made a deal with Masoj, stating that Masoj would help him find out what house destroyed House Devir, while he pretended to be Gelroos and gave Masoj advantages. Masoj agreed to the terms.
Plotting With Alton DeVir[]
“ | I should have killed him when I had the chance. | „ |
~ Masoj about Alton. |
For several years, Masoj plotted with Alton to discover the house that had destroyed House Devir, all the while moving up the ranks of the Sorcere at extraordinary rates because of blackmailing his "mentor". At one point, Alton tried to contact his mother from beyond the grave to find out what House destroyed them, only to discover that she was in Lolth's hell, prompting a demon to blow up his study. Masoj's eyebrows were permanently burned off in the explosion.
Masoj eventually revealed Alton to his mother SiNafay, who discovered that House Do'Urden destroyed House Devir. From then on, Masoj and Alton worked under her to take down House Do'Urden.
Trying to Destroy House Do'Urden[]
“ | Silence! The cat is mine! I do not need any bargains from a pitiful Do'Urden! You are dead fool, and House Do'Urden's weapons master will follow you to the grave! | „ |
~ Masoj confronting Drizzt. |
After Masoj graduated from the Sorcere, SiNafay arranged for him to be the mentor of the youngest Do'Urden, named Drizzt. During the mentorship, Masoj grew to hate Drizzt, for his natural skill but apparent lack of ambition. The two went on several patrols together, during which time, Masoj realized that his astral cat Guenhwyvar like Drizzt more than him, which annoyed him. At one point, Alton, in a fit of rage, tried to kill Drizzt, but was stopped by Masoj, who didn't want to blow their cover.
Eventually, SiNafay ordered Masoj to kill Drizzt, a task he happily set out to do. He tried to kill him once, while the two battled an earth elemental, but failed. During his second attempt, he sent Guenhwyvar to kill Drizzt, but the cat overcame her compulsion to obey his order and returned with Drizzt. Masoj and Alton fought Drizzt and Guenhwyvar and were both killed.
Powers and Abilities[]
Masoj was a proficient magic user, and this made him a formidable opponent. He also had many magical items, such as his figurine of magical power, that allowed him to summon and control the astral panther Guenwyvar. In addition, he was quite intelligent, manipulative, and crafty.
Trivia[]
- For centuries to come, Drizzt would use Masoj Hun'ett as a cover name when infiltrating the drow.
