Mason Lockwood is one of the secondary antagonists in the Vampire Diaries franchise. He was a major antagonist in The Vampire Diaries, being the secondary antagonist of season 2. He is a young adult who seeks the moonstone to avoid becoming a lycanthrope due to the pain it causes him, he is the uncle of Tyler Lockwood and one of the Damon Salvatore's most formidable enemies
He was portrayed by Taylor Kinney.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Mason is a young surfer who lives in Florida and has a werewolf gene that makes him avoid personal relationships. One day, he meets Kathy, a girl he is attracted to. Kathy causes a fight between Mason and his friend Jimmy so they fight for her love. Unfortunately, during the fight, Mason kills Jimmy. Because of this, he is forced to flee and remain in hiding for a long time.
Season 2[]
Mason returns to town for his brother Richard's funeral, meeting Tyler after many years. Mason tells Jeremy to leave while he drinks with Tyler. Later, Tyler tears up a photo of his father and tries to attack his mother, but Mason stops him. Mason explains to Tyler that his behavior is due to Lockwood's curse.
Mason engages in a wrestling match at the carnival against Tyler and Stefan, and proves his strength by beating Carter when he gets into a fight with Tyler. He is also shown to have the ability to jump very high and his eyes glow briefly. Also, it is revealed that Mason is locked in an underground cell and bound in chains during the full moon because he cannot control himself when he is in wolf form.
Mason discovers that the Salvatores are vampires at Jenna's party, and confesses that in order to become a werewolf, he had to kill someone. He then tells Liz Forbes about them and gives the moonstone to Katherine Pierce, his boss and new girlfriend. He also reveals that he has been working for Katherine for a year, after meeting her on the Emerald Coast of Florida. Katherine forced her friend Jimmy to fight Mason, but she accidentally killed Jimmy defending herself, triggering Mason's curse and his eyes turning yellow.
Katherine, not Mason, is the one looking for the moonstone and wants him to break the Sun and Moon curse. Damon kidnaps him with Bonnie's help and tortures him, eventually killing him by ripping out his heart.
Personality[]
Mason was Tyler's "cool" uncle, sexy and athletic, with a quiet charm but could be dangerous if enraged. He was in love with Katherine and would do anything for her, even though he didn't seem to fully trust her. Mason cared about his nephew, Tyler, but his main goal was to get the moonstone, which he hid in a pit with vervain. He was also reluctant to reveal to Tyler how to activate the werewolf gene, possibly because he didn't want his nephew to have that burden or because he feared that Tyler might do something dangerous with that knowledge. Mason was eventually killed by Damon.
