The character is portrayed by Luca Toolan.
History[]
Mason Radcliffe first appeared in September 2023 as school began at Weatherfield High once again.
It quickly became clear that Mason was a bully who came from a "troublesome" family and had also gained a notorious reputation for himself. This was first evident when he targeted schoolgirl Ruby Dobbs and later got his friends to join him in teasing local resident Ryan Connor over his scars following an acid attack. In the latter case, Mason provoked Ryan into shouting at him before teacher Daniel Osbourne forced them to leave Ryan alone. Later on he stole the car belonging to Ruby's father Tyrone and ended up injuring a young girl named Eliza. Afterwards, Mason ordered his friends to give him an alibi on the incident.
Soon enough, Mason started bullying schoolboy Liam Connor Jr and forced their classmate Dylan Wilson into partaking in his gang. As such Mason's darker side steadily emerged, beginning when he forced Dylan to help him steal vapes that Daniel's nephew Simon Barlow was preparing to deliver in a building. This prompted Simon's father Peter to confront Mason and Dylan about it until Dylan's family intervened. It was then Mason decided to target Simon's cousin Amy in response, mocking her over her protestor placards. An argument ensued and Mason goaded Amy, who was about to hit him when the police arrived and Mason was forced to flee as Amy got taken in for questioning.
Afterwards Mason encouraged Dylan and Liam to smoke a disposable vape pen, which makes Dylan feel sick and Liam suffer a severe asthma attack. Dylan called an ambulance whereas Mason fled from the scene. Not long afterwards, Mason learned that Dylan's father Sean Tully had disposed of their remaining vapes. Mason then demanded that Dylan give him his new designer trainers as compensation for the lose of the vapes. But after Sean discovered that Dylan's trainers were missing and planned to go to the school about it, Dylan decides to tell Mason about what his father was planning to do.
Not wanting to get into trouble, Mason framed Liam by placing the trainers in his school locker. However, Liam's stepfather Gary Windass deduced what had happened and confronted Mason - warning him to stay away from Liam otherwise Mason would face the consequences. Mason later sent a threatening voicemail to Liam in retaliation, before proceeding to threaten Liam's mother Maria by stating that she will suffer if Liam tells on him again. Mason then led his friends to humiliate Liam by throwing rubbish on him and calling him a rat. When Mason started filming Liam on his phone, the latter retaliated and knocked the phone out of Mason's hand. This resulted in Mason brandishing a knife and threatening Liam with it. Mason was later approached by local police officer Craig Tinker, who searched Mason for the knife but did not find it on him. It later turned out that Mason had forced Dylan to hide the knife. Mason then believed that Liam was the one who reported him to the police and sent him a vile picture of a rat, unaware that it was in fact Liam's stepbrother Jake who had phoned the police.
By 2024, Mason's bullying of Liam worsened to the point where neither Maria and Gary became aware of the true circumstances of her son's ordeal. As such the school's headteacher Mrs Crawshaw was also oblivious to the trouble that Mason was causing and the suffering that Liam was enduring for months. At one point Mason pinned Liam against a wall and threatened him, but Liam managed to escape by setting off the school's fire alarm. Mason reports what Liam did to Mrs Crawshaw in retaliation and later stole Liam's phone, before ordering him to fight him in order to get it back. Moreover, Mason was straining Liam's friendship with Dylan and even got them fighting each other before painting Liam as the perpetuator. This resulted in Liam getting suspended from school.
When Liam returned to school, Mason destroyed a puppet he brought and ordered Dylan to film Liam crying in tears over it. Mason then taunted Liam even further by sending him abusive messages and even getting Dylan to corporate on the matter. However, after learning that Maria had seen the abusive messages, Mason and Dylan deleted them to avoid getting exposed for Liam's bullying ordeal. It was then Maria and Gary finally learned the truth about Liam's bullying situation anyways. Mason and Dylan are later confronted by Maria, who was returning a laptop Liam borrowed from school. She tells them that Liam would be moving schools because of them. Dylan began to feel bad about his actions whilst Mason treated the situation like a joke.
Later on, the impact of Mason's bullying of Liam nearly turned consequential and tragic when Liam started researching about suicide. This was discovered by Mrs Crawshaw and later by Gary, who then alerted Maria about what her son was planning to do. She and Gary managed to find Liam not going through with it and he tearfully broke down over the bullying he suffered from Mason and Dylan. Later on Mrs Crawshaw visited them and promised Liam that both Mason and Dylan will be put in isolation, even though Maria demanded that Mason be punished severely for bullying Liam and driving him to the point of suicide.
The next day, Mason and Dylan were spotted by Gary in a local playground. Mason started badmouthing Gary and told him that Liam will need to watch his back. This caused Gary to lash out at Mason and throw him to the ground. Sean witnessed this and intervened by threatening to report Gary to the police, especially after Mason falsely claims that Gary had attacked him for no reason. However, Sean later discovered Liam's bullying ordeal and that Mason was the culprit whilst Dylan had been involved in the incidents. Upon learning that Sean is aware of their actions, Mason visited Dylan in secret and warned him not to mention his name to Mrs Crawshaw about Liam's ordeal.
By the next morning, Dylan wanted to apologize to Liam for his behaviour. He approached the door and was about to knock on it when Mason encountered him. Seeing what Dylan was about to do, Mason confronted him and Dylan claims that Sean pressured him into apologizing to Liam for his behaviour. Mason then pressured Dylan to leave with him rather than apologize to Liam over the latter's bullying ordeal.
Mason was eventually arrested after the police were informed by Dylan about him threatening Liam with the knife and would have to go to court. Mason attempted to get Dylan to change his statement by threatening to have his two older brothers come after him and Sean and on the day of his sentencing, had one of his friends threaten to harm both Sean and Dylan's mother Violet if Dylan stuck to his statement. At first Dylan went along with what Mason wanted him to say, but later changed his mind and told the judge what really happened. After Dylan and Liam's statements, the judge told Mason that she would speak with his youth justice worker before saying this was the second time he had been charged with knife crime, the only sentence available would be a sentence of imprisonment. Sometime after this, Mason was sent to a young offenders institute.
In July 2024, Maria received news that Mason was going to be released from the young offenders institute. Just months later Mason was released from prison and he found himself under the wing of Stu and Yazmeen, working at Speed Daal in order to turn over a new leaf. But this came at the chagrin of Dylan's father Sean Tully along with most of the other residents such as Gary and Maria respectively.
Trivia[]
- Toolan announced his casting on social media saying: "There’s a new kid joining the cobbles - Mason Radcliffe. It’s an honour to be a part of a show that I’ve grown up on that has some of the warmest and most talented people." He was introduced as part of a bullying story line and first appeared when he first targeted Ruby Dobbs (Billie Naylor) before recruiting others to help him bully her more.
- Amy Jones from OK! suggested the storyline revolving on Mason's bullying of Liam was impactual by saying: "Coronation Street star Luca Toolan certainly made an impact when he joined the ITV soap earlier this year as bad boy Mason Radcliffe. Recently we've watched Mason rule the cobbles as he continues to influence those around him by leading them astray, particularly when it comes to young Dylan Wilson. Just last month, we saw Dylan and Mason picking on Liam Connor not long after targeting Ruby Dobbs in the heartwrenching school bullying storyline."
