~ The Master Crown's battle description. |
The Master Crown, is the overarching antagonist of Kirby's Return to Dream Land, serving as the overarching antagonist of Story Mode in the original and remake, and the main antagonist of the remake-exclusive extra mode Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler.
As its name suggests, it is a powerful crown created by the Ancients of Halcandra that grants incredible power to those who wield it. However, it is later revealed that the crown has a mind of its own, corrupting whoever wields it until eventually taking complete control over them.
Magolor wished to obtain it to become a god and conquer the universe, only for it to gradually corrupt him even further and eventually he becomes the crown itself. After he was freed from its influence, the Master Crown reforms itself with the Gem Apple seed as a being known as the Tree Crown.
Appearance[]
The Master Crown is known to change its form depending of who is its wearer; While on Landia's head, the Master Crown becomes is a small typical golden crown with spikes on its base and a green gem in its center.
While on Magolor's head, it becomes a severely larger crown with an eye appearing around its gem and its spikes turning into claws that hold onto Magolor's head. On Magolor EX, the gem is instead purple. After fusing physically with Magolor, the crown evolves even more, growing wings out of it and wrapping its claws around Magolor's whole body,
As Magolor Soul, the crown turns pale white and sprouts crooked, twisted barbs as its gem turns red. Halfway though the second phase in the True Arena battle of Deluxe, Magolor's eyes disappear completely and the eye within his mouth appears permanently, signifying that he and the crown have become one.
After fusing with the Gem Apple seed, it turns into a gigantic Gem Apple tree, with blue leaves on its top, long wooden arms and swirled roots. The crown stays in the tree's center with a large golden eyeball, golden vines wrapped all around the tree and an enormous pair of wings on its back.
Biography[]
Past[]
The Master Crown was created by the Ancients long ago as a source of infinite power. However, a cataclysmic event occurred, possibly caused by the crown itself, destroying the Ancients' civilization. The crown then came into the possession of Landia, who was somehow able to keep the crown from corrupting it and became its guardian, protecting it from any who would try to obtain it as it made its home on the planet of Halcandra.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land[]
In time, an alien traveler named Magolor has learned about the Master Crown and, wanting to use it to become powerful enough to take over the entire universe, visited Halcandra. After unearthing the Lor Starcutter from the planet, he tried to steal the crown from Landia but was quickly beaten and forced to crash-land on Planet Popstar, where he would meet Kirby, Bandana Waddle Dee, Meta Knight and King Dedede.
Kirby and his friends would help Magolor rebuild the Starcutter, allowing him to return to Halcandra. Having learnt about Kirby and his power prior to his quest, Magolor had him and his friends defeat Landia for him and proceeded to steal the Master Crown, placing it on his head as he transformed into a powerful wizard and started his conquest by making his way to Popstar. However, Kirby and his friends gave chase with Landia's help and fought Magolor.
However, when Kirby seemingly landed the final blow on Magolor, the crown suddenly took control of his body, mutating it into a ghastly form as it gradually drained his soul and tried to kill Kirby for good. However, Kirby and his friends managed to prevail and beat the crown, shattering it as Magolor's body was reverted to normal and he and the crown's remains were banished to Another Dimension.
Magolor Epilogue[]
After Kirby and his friends defeat Magolor Soul, Magolor is revealed to have been warped to Another Dimension along with fragments of the Master Crown. He is stripped of all of his powers and ventures through the landscape with the hope to regain them. Magolor then comes across a fruit fragment which is the key to restoring his powers. He would go on to fight through the dimension beating bosses and gaining his powers back.
After collecting all five fruit fragments, it then creates the Gem Apple Seed. Before Magolor is able to escape the dimension, fragments of the Master Crown possess the Gem Apple Seed, creating the Crowned Doomer. After Magolor defeats it, the Master Crown then transforms into a massive tree-like entity and attempts to kill Magolor. However, Magolor manages to slay the monstrosity by forging an Ultra Sword and uses it to slice it in half, presumably destroying the Master Crown for good.
Trivia[]
- The Master Crown is one of the few sentient artifacts who played an antagonistic role in the series, along with Star Dream and Galactic Nova.
- A highly popular theory in the Kirby fandom suggests that the Master Crown was corrupted by or possibly created with Dark Matter, since Magolor Soul's eyemouth bears a striking resemblance to Zero and Void Termina, who is implied to be Dark Matter's root, can summon duplicates of the crown. Recently, this theory was given some credence in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe when it was revealed to not only be sentient the entire time, but it also corrupts Magolor further by taking away his normal eyes as he fully becomes the crown itself.
