Master Xehanort is the main antagonist of the Dark Seeker Saga in the Kingdom Hearts franchise.

He is the original incarnation of Xehanort from which Ansem, Seeker of Darkness, Xemnas and all others spawned. He manipulated almost every event in the series, and devised many backup plans that involve dividing his heart among 13 different beings created from his power and take over the universe. He is the archenemy of the Guardians of Light.

Master Xehanort was a Keyblade Master, the first master of Ventus, and the creator and master of Vanitas, the original incarnation of Ansem and Xemnas and the future self of Young Xehanort. He served as the main antagonist of both Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts III and the overarching antagonist of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance, being the true villain who has orchestrated the whole event.

In Japanese, he was voiced by the late Chikao Ōtsuka (who also voiced Captain Hook in the same series, Professor Moriarty in Sherlock Hound, Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog and Wario in Japanese commercials for the Wario games) in Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance, and by his son Akio Ōtsuka (who also voices Ansem, Seeker of Darkness and Terra-Xehanort in the same series, alongside Marshall D. Teach in One Piece) from Kingdom Hearts III onwards.

Powers and abilities

Master Xehanort is one of the strogest characters in the series, stated to be the most powerful Keyblade Wielder of them all even in his old age, possibly only rivaled by King Mickey Mouse in terms of power.

χ-blade

• Magical Mastery: Xehanort's greatest combat skill clearly lies in his extreme magical prowess, casting the highest level of elemental magic spells with ease and great potency: Birth by Sleep shows his capability to create massive rock formations and pillars on a whim, firing multiple blocks of ice at once and striking with powerful overhead thunderbolts as well as encasing Ventus's body in ice and projecting a gust of wind powerful enough to send Ventus and Mickey flying from his hand. In Kingdom Hearts III, his armored form displayed remarkable feats of elemental magic once again, able to raise gigantic pillars of flame and scatter balls of thunder and fire, and he was able to make proficient use of the Za-tier spells, performing several Thundazas to strike with several bolts of blue lightning at once multiple times and empowering the X-Blade with ice magic to freeze Sora before raining down multiple Firaza balls. The Re:Mind version of his armored form could even rain down meteors.
  • Telekinesis: Xehanort also displays incredible telekinetic prowess, to where he could telekinetically control the Keyblades covering the Keyblade Graveyard without even needing to use hand gestures. In Re:Mind, Armored Xehanort displays the ability to masterfully manipulate the replicas of his Keyblade for multiple attacks.
  • Space and Time Magic: Xehanort proved extremely adept in time-based magic when he was able to cast such a powerful enough Stopza spell that it overpowered Mickey's Ultima and was able to freeze the latter and Riku. He has also displayed unseen levels of control over space after absorbing his past selves, being able to warp and twist the space around Scala Ad Caelum and could place an orb around Sora to teleport him to his location.
• Keyblade Mastery: Despite his old age, Xehanort remains a formidable Keyblade Master and retains enough speed and strength to effectively deliver fast-paced powerful physical combos. He could keep up with a darkness-using Terra long enough for him to gain the opening needed to possess him and easily repelled an enraged Sora's attack. After absorbing the twelve Replica Xehanorts, Xehanort gains a new Keyblade Armor and enhances the efficiency of his Keyblade skills by empowering himself with darkness to increase the strength of his attacks and incorporating his teleportation to swiftly counter attacks. He can perform swift spinning moves to quickly cover distances and attack repeatedly without a chance of interruption and also can use a version of "Dark Aura" where he charges at Sora from all directions at great speeds and deals heavy damage. While wielding the χ-Blade, Xehanort can perform powerful swipes.
  • Formchange: No Heart displayed the ability to Formchange the No Name into several shapes such as gauntlets, graves, and a pincer. While wielding the χ-Blade, Xehanort can Formchange it into a whip for long-range attacks and also a long staff and can create cannons that fire beams of light or red energy as well as unleash razors of light.
• Manipulation and cunning: From Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep to Kingdom Hearts III, all events in the series played out exactly as Xehanort, either directly or indirectly, intended them to in order to allow him to eventually unlock Kingdom Hearts and use it to "purge" the world as he envisions it. However, it is revealed in Kingdom Hearts III that he himself was being manipulated all along by Xigbar.

Trivia

• Leonard Nimoy, his first English voice actor, and Chikao Ohtsuka, his first Japanese voice actor, both passed away in 2015, necessitating their replacements in Kingdom Hearts III.
  • Rutger Hauer, Xehanort's second English voice actor, passed away several months after the release of Kingdom Hearts III and was replaced again. Christopher Lloyd, his third English voice actor, would even redub some of Hauer's lines in Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind, although Hauer's performance in the base game is still retained.
  • His third English voice actor was well-received to the point fans felt disappointed Christopher Lloyd didn't get more time for the role.
• According to Nomura, Kingdom Hearts III is the last game where Xehanort is the main antagonist, however a memory-based version would later appear in Melody of Memory.
  • He is, however, the protagonist of Kingdom Hearts Dark Road, which covers his early years, indicating that while Kingdom Hearts III is indeed the last game where Xehanort is the antagonist, it is not the last game with Xehanort himself.
• Master Xehanort is the overarching and most recurring antagonist in the series so far, as every incarnation of him is the main antagonist in each game in the Dark Seeker Saga except Kingdom Hearts Coded; although one of his incarnations was indirectly responsible for the events that took place in the game, Xehanort himself is the main antagonist in Birth by Sleep and Kingdom Hearts III. Young Xehanort is his teenage self and the main antagonist in Dream Drop Distance. Through his Terra-Xehanort incarnation, Ansem, Seeker of Darkness is his Heartless and the main antagonist in Kingdom Hearts as well as Riku's story in Chain of Memories and Xemnas is his Nobody and the main antagonist in Kingdom Hearts II.
  • It was mentioned in Kingdom Hearts III by Mickey to Riku that if Ansem, Seeker of Darkness and Xemnas had been the Heartless and Nobody of Master Xehanort (and not Terra-Xehanort) then they would be just as old as he is instead of being younger like they had been.
• Tetsuya Nomura deliberately cast the late Leonard Nimoy as Master Xehanort because of his role as Spock from Star Trek and did so opposite Star Wars actor Mark Hamill as Xehanort's rival Eraqus to pit the two franchises against each other.
• Nomura also deliberately cast the late Chikao Ohtsuka because he was the father of Akio Ohtsuka, the voice of Terra-Xehanort and Ansem, and hint at Master Xehanort's connections to said characters.
• Xehanort appears in a Robot Chicken sketch in which he holds a "Key party" with Sora, Donald, Goofy, Maleficent and others present and is seen hugging Queen Elsa. He was voiced by Seth Green.
• Xehanort makes a brief cameo on Aqua's dive into the heart at the Dive Into The Heart portion of the Hallow Bastion stage in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
