Mata Hari is a major antagonist in the 2021 historical action/spy film The King's Man.
She was a Dutch exotic dancer and 5th highest ranking member and spy for the Flock who helped in the development and subsequent events of The Great War, perhaps most infamously by blackmailing the U.S president so that he wouldn't get involved in the conflict to ensure that The Shepherd's plan was a success.
She was portrayed by Valerie Pachner.
Biography[]
Mata Hari is an agent of the Flock and aids in The Shepherd's plan to destroy England by making them lose World War I. After the Zimmerman Telegram is recovered, giving the United States a reason to join the war on Britain's side, Hari is deployed to stop this. To that end, she plans to seduce President Woodrow Wilson and use a recording of the act to blackmail him into keeping out of the war.
Upon arrival, Hari initially succeeds in seducing Wilson and blackmailing him to keep out of the war. However, while at the US Embassy she encounters Duke Orlando Oxford, who has been working against the Flock. Recognising her ring as one used by Flock agents (both Gavrilo Princip and Grigori Rasputin had one like it), Orlando engages her in combat and is able to choke her into unconsciousness with her own cashmere scarf. She is then arrested by embassy staff, who explain the blackmail situation to Orlando.
With Hari captured, The Shepherd passes responsibility for the blackmail plot to Alfred Dupont. However, Orlando is now in possession of her scarf and manages to track down its source of origin through his tailor friends at the Kingsman shop, allowing him to locate the Shepherd's hideout. As such, Orlando and his allies Polly and Shola are able to storm the base, kill the Shepherd and Dupont and reclaim and destroy the evidence of Wilson's seduction, allowing America to join the war and defeat Germany.
Personality[]
Mata Hari was very intelligent and calculating as well as rather sadistic. She was one of the most loyal agents to The Flock demonstrated clearly when she takes great offence at Rasputin's lack of enthusiasm for the ring and animal The Shepherd had chosen for him. She also seemed to genuinely believe in The Shepherd's cause and was willing to do whatever was necessary to accomplish The Flock's goals.
Appearance[]
Mata Hari was a very tall and beautiful woman with fair skin, brown eyes and thick, collarbone length auburn hair. She had a rather extravagant fashion sense and was always wearing the standard cashmere scarf and ring typical of all flock members with Hari using the scarf as part of some of her dance routines.
Trivia[]
- In real life Mata Hari was arrested on suspicion of being a German spy and executed, with many to this day still debating whether or not she was genuinely guilty or just used as a scapegoat.
- Hari was the only member of the Flock to be imprisoned rather than evading punishment or ultimately dying. However, she is presumably executed for espionage like the real-life Mata Hari.
- Curiously Mata is the only member of the Flock who didn't have her animal revealed to the audience.
