Matias Solomon is a major antagonist in the TV series The Blacklist and The Blacklist: Redemption.
Appearing as a high-ranking member of the cabal, Solomon is infamous for his torture methods which he adopted in the war. He is one of the most experienced members, combining deadly efficiency, intelligence, and ruthlessness in one. Solomon is also the archenemy of Dembe Zuma, as he terrorized him and his family.
He is played by Edi Gathegi.
Biography[]
Matias Solomon was born in Ethiopia and began his career as a CIA informant during the Eritrean conflict. His involvement in covert operations, such as Operation Backslide in Somalia, was marked by such brutality that even the CIA disavowed him. His ruthlessness, however, caught the attention of Laurel Hitchin, a high-ranking official and member of the clandestine organization known as the Cabal. She recruited him, and Solomon soon became one of their top operatives, disappearing in the United States for over a decade.
Solomon returned to the forefront when the Cabal reignited its war against Raymond Reddington and Elizabeth Keen. Tasked with eliminating them, Solomon began a campaign of abductions and psychological warfare. He kidnapped Dembe Zuma’s granddaughter, used her as leverage, and tortured Dembe for information. His cruelty and efficiency were evident throughout his missions, often leaving a trail of bodies and threats in his wake.
When Solomon’s efforts to neutralize Reddington failed, the Cabal turned against him. He was arrested and nearly executed during a staged prison transfer but was rescued by Halcyon Aegis, a private military contractor. Recognizing his value, they offered him a new position as an operative. Solomon accepted and became a field agent under the command of Susan Hargrave.
Solomon’s first major mission for Halcyon involved the attempted kidnapping of Elizabeth Keen during her wedding. He orchestrated a diversion using a nuclear hoax to distract the FBI, while he led a full-scale assault on the church. Though the mission ultimately failed due to intervention by Reddington’s team, Solomon continued pursuing Liz, even as she fled wounded. He tracked her to a hospital but missed her by minutes.
Over time, Solomon found himself working alongside former enemies as Halcyon and Reddington formed a temporary alliance against a greater threat. He was partnered with Tom Keen, and together they conducted high-stakes operations, including a bank heist designed to access secret political funds. During the robbery, Solomon shot a plainclothes officer and accidentally caused collateral damage, but reluctantly aided Tom in rescuing a wounded child.
Their collaboration continued with a covert mission at the Turkish embassy in Berlin. After drugging a target, Solomon and his partner Nez Rowan impersonated medical personnel to extract him. While fleeing the scene, Solomon entered a pharmacy to secure an antidote necessary for their mission. In a moment of vengeance, Tom Keen shot Solomon and left him for dead. Despite the near-fatal wound, Solomon managed to escape the scene before the authorities arrived.
Personality[]
Matias Solomon displays a calm, calculated demeanor that masks a deeply psychopathic nature. He takes pleasure in manipulation, inflicts suffering without remorse, and treats violence as a means of control. His charm is disarming, often used to unsettle opponents before delivering threats or pain. He lacks empathy entirely, seeing people as tools or obstacles. Even under pressure, he remains composed, often smiling or speaking politely while committing brutal acts. His loyalty is opportunistic, shifting according to power, and his sense of morality is nonexistent.
