Matias Torres is a major antagonist in the Ace Combat series, specifically the main antagonist of the mission "Invincible Fleet" of Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies and the main antagonist of the three DLC missions of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.
Formerly known as the Hero of Comberth Harbor, Torres now commands the Alicorn nuclear submarine in an attempt to nuke Oured and kill a million people to force the countries to stop the war out of sheer horror of the event.
He was voiced by Armen Taylor in the English dub and by Hiroki Yasumoto in the Japanese dub.
Biography[]
Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies[]
During the sixth mission "Invincible Fleet", Torres was the captain of the flagship Tanager of the Aegir Fleet and it was subsequently sunk by the Independent State Allied Forces. Before the ship sunk completely, Captain Torres rescued as many sailors as possible, earning him a medal and the title of "Hero of Comberth Harbor".
Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown[]
Around 2016 Torres became captain of the Alicorn submarine but an accident caused the submarine to become marooned at the bottom of the ocean without communication for nearly 2 years. While 26 of Torres men died he managed to keep his remaining 330 men alive but all of them began losing their sanity and rational thinking until they were rescued in 2018, Torres included. In 2019 when the Lighthouse War began Torres began plotting to nuke Oured, the capital of Osea, under the delusional belief that killing over 1 million people would terrify both sides into ending the war. He even deployed 30 of his men to serve as agents to ensure his plan's completion who began various operations of sabotage, espionage, cyber propaganda and false intelligence. One of these agents was Edgar Saxon aka Zul who began misleading Brigadier General Howard Clemens into attacking various locations of importance to Erusea but unwillingly playing into Torres' plan.
Unexpected Visitor[]
Torres shows up during the beginning of the mission as the Long Range Strategic Strike Group (LRSSG) begin their assault on Artiglio Port in an attempt to capture the Alicorn submarine, telling his crew to set off as soon as they're ready. When the Oseans defeat the Eruseans Torres is ordered to destroy the submarine to prevent it falling into enemy hands only for him to inform his superiors that he no longer serves the Eursean military and instead orders the submarine to open fire on the Osean fleet and deploys four SACS aircraft (one of which is carrying a cruise missile) as a distraction giving the Alicorn enough time to escape. However Trigger manages to shoot down the cruise missile aircraft which enrages Torres who intended to make a statement with it, but quickly realizes Trigger can be of use to their plan.
Anchorhead Raid[]
In this mission, the LRSSG believes that Torres is trying to team up with the Erusean Navy, so they sent the Strider Squadron to destroy said fleet. During the resulting battle, Torres attempts to interfere with Trigger by sending out a SLUAV to serve as a targeting indicator for the Alicorn's railgun shells while laughing maniacally and screaming "Salvation!" over the radio, but Trigger either manages to avoid them or shoots down the SLUAV before the Alicorn could fire the shells.
By the time the battle is over, the Alicorn left the area, bound for Osea's capital Oured. The Alicorn never intended to join forces with Erusea, it only stopped at Anchorhead Bay to resupply for the nuclear attack on Oured and went unnoticed in the resulting chaos. It's also revealed that the Oseans source of intel, Edgar Saxon, was in fact an Alicorn agent misleading them from the beginning, hinting that the Artiglio Port assault was also part of Torres' plan to breakaway from the Eursean military.
Ten Million Relief Plan[]
The Alicorn continued heading closer to Oured. Torres planned to bomb the city on September 19, when mass demonstrations were bound to happen there, to maximize casualties. On September 19, however, the submarine was discovered by Osean forces. A subsequent attack damaged it and forced it to surface, allowing Strider Squadron and Trigger to target it. When it seemed that defeat was imminent, Torres declared his intention to surrender. It was, however, a ruse meant to buy time to fire the Alicorn's cannon at Oured. Trigger, however, attacked the submarine, causing the cannon to miss. Matias tried every last trick, even partially sinking the Alicorn to get the right angle for the launch, but Trigger managed to destroy the submarine, killing Torres and preventing his plan from becoming reality.
