Matilde Sánchez is the overarching antagonist of the biographical television series Luis Miguel: The Series, serving as the overarching antagonist of the first season, one of the two main antagonists (alongside Patricio Robles) of the second season and a minor antagonist in the third season.

She is based on the real-life incarnation of the late Spanish flamenco singer of the same, who is the mother of the late Spanish singer Luisito Rey and paternal grandmother-turned-second archnemesis of the Mexican singer Luis Miguel.

She is portrayed by Lola Casamayor.

Biography[]

Season 1[]

Matilde doesn't appear as much in the season. However, it is known that she has been taking care of Sergio, Micky's newborn brother, following the disappearance of their mother Marcela, whom Matilde had a strained relationship with since, in every argument they had, her husband Luisito Rey would always side with her elderly mother.

During a visit to Madrid, Matilde and Micky have a conversation while she takes Sergio to play at the park. Micky finds out that she has been the one sending poscards to him and Alex, disguising her handwriting as Marcela's. During nightfall, she arrives at her home and finds her son, along with Sergio, passed out on the doorstep, having fallen seriously ill and he is rushed to the hospital. Rey eventually succumbs to his illness, leaving Matilde and Alex completely heartbroken and comforting each other.

Season 2[]

Following Luisito Rey's death, Matilde earns a larger and pivotal role in this season than the one she had in the previous season. She attended his funeral in Cadiz, along with her nephew Tito and grandsons, Micky, Alex and Sergio. Requesting a private talk with Micky, Matilde apologizes to him for not telling him earlier about his father being hospitalized, which he understandably dismisses, and that he was a very complicated man in spite of his many ups and downs. However, it turns sour when she makes it clear to Micky that Sergio will still be living with her in Madrid, as stated in her deceased son's will. Knowing what she has in mind, Micky defiantly warns Matilde that he will not allow her and TIto to exploit Sergio like his own father did to him in the past. Even at the funeral of Hugo López, who used to be Micky's manager and a father figure to him, Matilde's determination to stop her grieving yet empowered grandson meets no boundaries. In response, Micky threatens to make her life miserable before ever staying near Sergio.

So, for most of the season, Matilde does everything in her power to keep sole custody of Sergio away from Micky, trying to use something against him as leverage that he is not fit enough to be a legal guardian for his brother, claiming that they barely know each other. Sergio, on the other hand, enjoys his grandmother's company, even opening up on how lonely he feels following his father's death, his mother Marcela's disappearance, Alex's departure (because of Micky scolding him for crashing his car even if it was unintentional) and Micky's demanding career as a singer, which leaves him little to no time to see him personally. Thus, he remains unaware of her true intentions. Matilde promises Sergio that she will be always closer to him.

After making some research, Matilde finds out that Cynthia Casas, a journalist whom Micky is at odds with, is writing a book about his personal life. With this newfound discovery, Matilde gives Micky an ultimatum: either he lets her take care of Sergio as her legal guardian (per her son's will) as planned previously or she will make sure that Casas leaks to the press every specific controversial detail regarding Micky's personal life, including Marcela's disappearance and the fact about her firstborn daughter, Michelle (from his affair with Sophie Salas, based on Stephanie Salas in real life), who he hasn't seen for almost eleven years. For Sergio's own sake, Micky has no choice but to give in to Matilde's demands so that his career won't be further damaged by her interference. However, Micky's obsession with preventing Sergio from repeating his own mistakes resurfaces when Sergio reveals that Matilde has signed him up for a singing constest back in Madrid.

Initially, Micky vainly tries to dissuade Sergio from becoming a professional singer at such young age by imitating his father's strict personality, mirroring how he made his son rehearse incessantly to the point of exhaustion, thrn secretly uses Patricio Robles, his current career manager, to try and thwart Matilde by making her sign a Warner Music contract that goes against her conditions to control Sergio, which she seemingly signs. As Patricio leaves and checks the contract's signature blank space, it turns out that Matilde actually wrote "Gilipollas" in it (standing for "A--hole" in Spanish), having predicted this bold move from Micky and outsmarted him in that way. As promised earlier, Matilde turns to Cynthia and tells her about Micky's personal life, leaking the information to the press and causing a negative impact on Sergio: he is bullied by students of his school over Marcela's disappearance and the reporters keep asking him questions both about Micky and Marcela. Feeling guilty for having involved Sergio in his controversial issues, Micky tries to make things right with him.

Matilde arrives to pick Sergio as she tends to his injuries, when Micky and Alex show up. Matilde calls them out for their supposed incompetence in taking care of Sergio, feigning ignorance to Sergio about the incident and pinning it on both of his brothers. After some threats that Matilde remains unafraid of, she (and then Micky, despite Alex's objections) decide to let Sergio choose who he wants to live with: them or Matilde. Sergio chooses the latter, mirroring how Micky did the same mistake in choosing his father (since Micky became famous because of him) instead of his family, which sadly cost him a possible reunion with Marcela. Refusing to give up, Micky locates both Matilde and Sergio at a hotel room where he forces her to tell Sergio the truth. LIAR!!!!, Matilde furiously yells at Micky when she refuses. Fortunately, Micky shows Sergio the poscards supposedly written by Marcela, but whose handwriting was disguised, as solid evidence of Matilde's ruse, also exposing her as the culprit for tipping off the media about her disappearance. Angered and betrayed, Sergio quickly turns on Matilde and walks out with Micky as she desperately begs Sergio to return until they close the door on Matilde, leaving her completely distraught and saying to herself and her deceased son that Sergio is disappointed on both of them.

Despite her defeat, however, Matilde had partly somewhat won due to the fact that Sergio is forced to move away in order to protect him from the press, now that they are aware of Marcela's disappearance. Patricio also points out to Micky that the same could happen to Michelle, reinforced by Micky's arrogant personal assistant José Pérez, when he was about to reveal her existence to the world through an interview, thus backing out at the last minute after Patricio talks him out of it.

Trivia[]

  • As of the end of the second season, the fictionalized version of Matilde was still alive. However, in real life, Matilde died in 1993, almost a year after the death of her son Luisito Rey.
    • However, Matilde did not appear nor she was mentioned at all in the third season, which would imply that she did die in said year, just like her son Luisito Rey died in 1992 of pneumonia, although this is never confirmed by Luis Miguel in the season itself. In addition, Matilde's death is not shown onscreen unlike her son's.
  • Despite her absence and non-mentions in season 3, heavily implying that she died, Matilde's drastic actions left negative consequences on the strained relationship between Luis Miguel and Sergio, thus gaining her the last laugh. After Micky's private life was leaked (which mirrors how Luisito Rey tipped off the media about the truth of his son's birthplace, almost costing him both his career and recent relationship with Erika), he was forced to send Sergio away to Boston with Doc and study at a boarding school in order to prevent the journalists from harassing him, which would also be the reason why he didn't reveal his daughter Michelle's existence, fearing that the same could happen to her after being talked out of it by both Patricio Robles and José Pérez.
    • Because of this, Sergio mistakenly thought that Micky, mainly because of his singing career, didn't love him anymore nor did he want to have anything to do with him, so Sergio refused to see or even talk to him, stating that if Micky did truly love him, he wouldn't have sent him away, thus refusing to acknowledge the fact that he was only trying to protect him, to which Micky reacted angrily due to Sergio's hypocrisy and ungratefulness in the situation. At one point, when Sergio finally did want to see Micky, he immediately accepted. Unfortunately, his relationship with Mariah Carey made Micky slip his mind and fail to show up after being tempted into staying with her (although an argument between them over Micky constantly keeping tabs on Mariah prompted him to leave voluntarily), angering Sergio further.
  • In the series, Matilde met with journalist Cynthia Casas, based on the real-life journalist Claudia de Icaza, and leaked to her all of the information related to her grandson Luis Miguel's personal life, as revenge for him trying to sabotage her plans with Sergio. However, in real life, it was later confirmed by de Icaza herself that she and Matilde never actually met, since Matilde had already died before the journalist had published the unauthorized biography of the singer in 1994.
