Babel Tanit, also known as Matriarch Babel, is a minor antagonist in Genshin Impact, serving as the main antagonist of the Desert of Hadramaveth World Quests part the Great Red Sand World Quests, in where she acts as the main antagonist.
Biography[]
Babel was among the various leaders of the Tanit tribe, having revealed to be born to forest-dweller Vahumana parents and adopted into the Tanit by one of the mercenaries after her biological parents were killed, with her mother being killed to put an end to her misery as she was described to be a “natural born killer” who “ripped her mother apart”. However, when Jeht arrived and revealed herself to be of Tanit heritage, Babel saw an opportunity. She took Jeht in and got her to view her as a surrogate mother. Once this was done, she got Jeht to execute the other leaders under the claim that they were traitors to the tribe.
Eventually, her work turns Jeht into one of the toughest members of the tribe. When the Traveler is invited by Jeht, Babel welcomes them and lets them help Jeht, having determined them to be just as useful, all while banishing those she doesn't like or need. Hearing about the Ever Oasis, Babel gives Jeht to instructions on how to get there, allowing her and the Traveler to find a Jinni named Liloufar due to Jeht seeking to go there to bring what is left of her biological parents.
Once the two managed to locate the Ever Oasis, Babel begins the next steps in her plans while telling the two of them to rest. As the Jinni is a necessity for her plan she begins to order various members of the tribe to kill the Traveler in order to acquire it, but the Traveler manages to beat most of them. At the same time, Babel feels like she doesn't need Jeht anymore either. Thus, she gets Yuften to send the Traveler to track down a stolen wagon so that some tanit eremites that had been branded "traitors" would kill him while telling him that it was Jeht who sent them. When the Traveler survives, Babel tells the Traveler that Jeht has betrayed the tribe. At the same time, she told Jeht that the Traveler betrayed her and sends both of them into a Fatui base where the two fight before two more Tanits are sent by Babel to finish them off. However, the two manage to overcome the assassins.
Now realizing Babel's treachery, Jeht and the Traveler confront Babel. It is then that Babel reveals to Jeht that she needs to Traveler to die so they can have the Jinni to get to the Ever Oasis, asking Jeht to remain loyal to her under the claim she always saw her as a daughter or she would be killed with the Traveler. Furious, Jeht denounces her Tanit heritage and declares her intent to strike down Babel. Realizing Jeht is out for her blood, Babel retreats to her quarters while ordering the entire tribe to kill Jeht and the Traveler. They eventually reach her though after killing the rest of the tribe and bringing Babel to her knees.
However, Babel is quick to reveal she had a messenger tell every other eremite tribe that Jeht was a traitor, ensuring Jeht would be hunted for the rest of her life. When asked when she did this, Babel states before Jeht arrived from her failed assassination. Now knowing that Babel never loved her, Jeht kills her without any hesitation.
