Matsushige is a minor antagonist in Yakuza Kiwami, the remake of the first game of the Like a Dragon (formerly Yakuza) series. He was formerly part of the Tojo Clan's Kazama family before being transferred to the Nishikiyama family, of which he treats the boss like dirt, playing a role in his downward spiral and eventual fall into villainy.

Yakuza Kiwami[]
After the Nishikiyama family is formed following the death of Sohei Dojima, Osamu Kashiwagi relocates some of the Kazama Family's men towards the Nishikiyama family to help Nishikiyama, One of those men, Matsushige, however, openly disrespects Nishikiyama, rudely telling him that they're only working for him due to it being on Kazama's orders.
After Nishikiyama learns from the doctor Kiminobu Hiyoshi that the only way to save his sister Yuko is to buy a heart from the black market, which would cost 30 million yen, Nishiki begs Matsushige to find the money by any means necessary. This leads Matsushige to rob money from stores on Kashiwagi's territory, knowing this would cause Kashiwagi to punish Nishiki.
Matsushige later arrives at Nishikiyama's office with 30 million yen, revealing that he got the money from a gambling-addicted doctor, stating that the doctor had paid off his loans. Nishiki realises this doctor was the same one that wanted the 30 million yen in the first place, realizing he was scammed and realising his sister was going to die.
After Yuko passes away, Nishiki is in his office about to commit suicide. Matsushige busts in and tells him and that the family needs to expand. When Nishiki ignores him, he calls him inept and compares him unfavorably to Kiryu. This causes Nishiki, who was already going through a downward spiral, to finally break, and stabs Matsushige, while telling him he was responsible for Dojima's death. Nishiki uses Matsushige's blood to comb back his hair, as he transforms into a far more ruthless person.
Trivia[]
- It is unclear if Shintaro Kazama sent the troublesome Matsushige to Nishikiyama's family in order to make him more ruthless and a stronger leader, or that is was a mistake on his part. Shimano suspects it was neither of these two options: he suspected Kazama set Nishikiyama up for failure, pointing out that Kiryu was the favorite and that Kazama wanted Kiryu to become chairman as the Kazama family can’t take Kiryu in for allegedly killing Dojima.
- Matsushige is a character completely unique to the remake and makes no appearance in the original game, as he and Hiyoshi were created to flesh out Nishiki's backstory.
