Biography[]
At some point before January of 2000, Matthew, along with Sean begin working as associates of the DiMeo Crime Family, along with working alongside Christopher Moltisanti, the nephew of the boss of the family, Tony Soprano. However, Matthew and Sean would frequently get into trouble with the police after committing various robberies orchestrated by Christopher. Overtime, Matthew and Sean realize they have no real place in the family, due to their lack of professionalism.
In order to rise up the ranks of the Mafia, the two decide to assassinate Christopher after hearing Capo, Richie Aprile talk about his disdain for Christopher. The two attempt a drive-by hit on Christopher, which fails as Chris shoots Sean in the head as he attempts to finish the job by leaving the car. After Sean is murdered, Matthew flees the scene, as both him and Chris continue to fire at each other. Despite Chris taking multiple shots by both Matt and Sean, he survives the attack, but is still badly injured.
Since Chris is both the protege and nephew of Tony, Richie refuses to protect Matthew, as he knows both him and Matt would have been murdered. In retaliation, Richie attempts to murder Matt by attacking him with a baseball bat, but Matt runs off and escapes due to Richie being worse shape than Matthew. Afterwards, Matt goes into hiding. Eventually, DiMeo soldier (as well as FBI Informant), Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero tracks down Matthew's location through the help of an unnamed teenager. Pussy and Tony drag the severely beaten Matthew into a refreshment shack, where they begin to interrogate Matt. In order to save his own skin, Matt blames the entirety of the hit attempt on Sean, as Sean was more of a scrapegoat, along with Sean having been murdered by Chris. After seeing how Matt has peed his pants, Tony tells Pussy to get drink from a stand in order to calm Matt down. As Matt is drinking the soda, Tony says, "that sugarless motherfucker is the last drink you are ever going to have", to which both Tony and Pussy then pull out their guns, as Matt cries for his mother and Tony's forgiveness, before he is then murdered by Tony and Pussy.
