~ Franks referring to his psychopathy and cheerleader fetishism. |
Matthew "Matt" Franks is the main antagonist of the Criminal Minds episode "Pariahville". He is a serial killer who murders women and dresses them up in cheerleader outfits.
He was portrayed by Noah Crawford.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Matthew Franks was born in 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia. At some point during his teen years, he developed a cheerleader fetish along with severe psychopathic tendencies. He was arrested in 2010 for stalking a cheerleader at his high school. The charges were dropped, however, and the cheerleader moved away.
In 2012, he was considered the prime suspect in the murder of another cheerleader, although he was let go since there was not enough physical evidence against him. His family then moved to Florida and settled near Glenport Village, an experimental community housing mostly convicted sex offenders. He got a job as an IT serviceman and took clients in and around Glenport Village. He developed an obsession with his next-door neighbor's daughter, Riley Desario, and this caused his fetish to spiral out of control. He stalked and murdered Paige Lincoln, a resident of Glenport Village who had a cheerleading outfit he saw while fixing her computer.
"Pariahville"[]
Franks lays low while the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) investigates the murder, focusing on the residents of Glenport Village, as they are the most obvious suspects. Eventually, however, he gives in to his violent urges and travels to Sumac Grove, where he kills Victoria Taylor, a local cheerleader.
The following night, Franks spots the latest object of his cheerleader obsession, Riley Desario, walking home after missing a party and rejecting a male friend's sexual advances. He offers her a ride, and she gets into his car, only to find that the seatbelt on her side is broken. He claims he will drive her back to the police station. However, he drives past it and knocks Riley out by accelerating the car and slamming on the breaks, causing Riley to hit her head on the dashboard.
He then takes Riley to her house and dresses her in her cheerleading outfit. When she wakes up, Franks holds her at knifepoint and begins to explain his obsession to her. Riley attempts to retrieve her father's shotgun from the closet by playing along with Franks' fantasy and luring him to the bedroom. Franks sees her reaching for it and subdues her. However, the BAU, who has by now deduced Franks is the killer, arrives on the scene and holds him at gunpoint. Franks holds Riley hostage and claims the BAU has "ruined" his plans. Agent Tara Lewis asks Franks about his parents, and he lowers his guard momentarily, allowing Lewis to shoot him in the neck, killing him.
Trivia[]
Franks is inspired by multiple real-life and fictional serial killers:
- James Koedatich, a serial killer active in two different states, including Florida, and found responsible for three murders, including of a young cheerleader.
- John Joubert, a.k.a. "The Woodford Slasher", a serial killer of boys who wasn't tied to a murder in Maine, before he killed two more boys in Nebraska and was caught similarly to Franks.
- Stuntman Mike, the main antagonist of the film Death Proof, who sped up a car and stopped it to bash a passenger's head into the dash, killing her.
