~ Matthew after defeating Gideon in combat. |
Matthew Patel is the secondary antagonist of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. He is Ramona Flowers' first ex-boyfriend, a member-turned leader of the League of Evil Exes and Broadway actor.
He was voiced by Satya Bhabha, who also portrayed Matthew in the 2010 film.
Biography[]
Overview[]
Matthew serves as the secondary antagonist of the Netflix adaptation, which serves as an alternate universe to the mainline series. His plot and backstory are the same as before, but in the alternate universe, he supposedly wins against Scott mere seconds in their first fight. However, Ramona rejects him in disgust for his actions. After this, he learns that Gideon never planned on letting any of the Exes get back Ramona if they beat Scott and was actually planning to keep her to himself. Angered by this, Matthew challenges Gideon to a fight for his entire empire, believing that Gideon isn't fit to be leader. In stark contrast to his original counterpart, who was labeled the weakest of the Exes, Matthew's confidence boost enables him to actually defeat Gideon, resulting in him taking over his empire and all the Exes.
Helping Ramona[]
“ | Scott Pilgrim? Do not be throwing hands at me right now. This is the biggest night of my career. I shouldn't even be wasting my voice on you. So, bzzzzz. | „ |
~ Matthew Patel not only finds out Scott Pilgrim is alive, but more focused on his Broadway career than fighting him. |
Matthew is later seen during the aftermath of the production of Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life, an in-universe film that told the canon events of the original story (based on a memoir written by Young Neil's future self). He shuts down the film production after hearing that the film portrayed him losing against Scott. Running into Ramona, he learns that the events of the film were the truth and that he never won against Scott because the latter was kidnapped mid-fight and taken into a portal, much to his surprise. He helps out Ramona by revealing details about Gideon's current wherabouts and his relationship with Julie, as well as the fact that his real name is actually Gordon Goose
Matthew is later revealed to have held a meeting with Knives and Stephen Stills, who proposed to turn the failed film production into a Off-Broadway musical where Matthew stars as Scott, playing into his past dreams of being in the theatre. Matthew agrees to this happily.
Defeating Older Scott and Becoming A Star[]
In the final episode, Matthew runs into Scott (who had just come back from the future after having been kidnapped by Older Scott) and, like the rest of the redeemed Exes, declines fighting him due to wanting to prepare for the musical, confirming that he has nothing to do with the barrier that is blocking Ramona and Scott from kissing each other. He performs in the musical, which is rather positvely received by the audience. However, near the ending of it, he and the rest of the main characters are transported to the Subspace. He learns that Gideon/Gordon was planning to blow up the musical as revenge for taking his company. The cast learn the Even Older Scott was responsible for transporting them, deciding to kill Scott and Ramona after learning that the former ignored his warnings to avoid dating Ramona. Angered at seeing him attack Scott and Ramona, the redeemed Matthew initiates a fight agains Future Scott with the rest of the cast, being the first to attack him and laying significant damage. However, like the rest of the Exes and Scott's social circle, he is easily defeated by Even Older Scott and transported back to the musical.
In the aftermath of Even Older Scott's defeat and the reconciliation between Ramona and Scott, Matthew is given a standing ovation by the audience for his performance, much to his happiness. After which, he prevents Gideon/Gordon from blowing up the muscial and reveals that he is no longer interested in running Gordon's company since he lost billions, giving back the company on the agreement that Gordon lets him keep the musical. The two of them happily embrace, which turns into maniacal laughter, implying they are now in an evil alliance. He is last seen being carried out by all the Exes and cheered for his work on the musical
In the Epilogue, it is revealed that Matthew, alongside the rest of the redeemed Exes, have moved to Toronto, his theatre dreams fully realized, with his musical about Scott's life winning over 27 Tony Awards. It's implied that he and the Exes are now friends with Scott, Ramona and their group.
Personality[]
Like his Original counterpart, Matthew is potrayed over-the-top, constantly making movements with his head and hands when speaking. He can be very maniacal when he wants to, and his powers are all proof of that.
