Suzanne: I don't want to fight you!
Maureen: Well, you might as well. You don't know how romance works. You don't even know how people work...and you never will. You'll always be the person that everybody laughs at.
Suzanne: Shut up!
Maureen: The same, pathetic, loser virgin!
~ Maureen taunting Suzanne Warren.

Maureen Kukudio was the secondary antagonist of season four of the 2012 series Orange is the New Black.

She served as a love interest for Suzanne 'Crazy Eyes' Warren and is an inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary.

She was portrayed by Emily Althaus.

Personality[]

Kukudio is depicted initially as an innocent (albeit somewhat overbearing) woman. As the series progresses, Maureen's mental instability comes to light the more that she develops her feelings for Suzanne. She is shown to have violent tendencies, as well as to be a manipulative and spiteful.

Physical appearance[]

Kukudio had a rounded face and short, curly, dark-blonde hair. She was only ever seen wearing her prison uniform. She had brown eyes. She has tattooed arms.

Biography[]

Background[]

Not much is known about Kukudio's history. It can be assumed that she had a homicidal/violent history as she is grouped with the inmates being investigated for Aydin Bayat's death who were in some way incarcerated for homicide.

Orange is the New Black[]

Kukudio is first seen in season three as a member of the Wiccan cult that has formed, and later seen attending a drama class held for the inmates. Maureen then develops an extreme obsession with Suzanne Warren and her erotica series, the Time Hump Chronicles. Trying to inspire Suzanne to write more lesbian erotica, she suggests the two of them could have sex, and that she will be waiting for her in a broom closet. Curious, Suzanne goes to meet Maureen, but ultimately gets too anxious and leaves a disappointed Maureen.

After the prisoners breach the fencing and visit the lake, Maureen and Suzanne begin flirting. Maureen's feelings for Suzanne accel quickly, and begs Suzanne to run away with her. After they reach an abandoned house, Suzanne becomes sceptical about the situation after realising Kukudio is unstable, causing Suzanne to run away and leave Kukudio yet again.

Warden Caputo begins his search for Maureen and finds her in the house and returns her to the prison. He looks over Maureen's file and is horrified by her past. Suzanne and Maureen reconcile, and the two agree to finally have their meeting in the broom closet. However, during intercourse, Maureen leaves Suzanne as revenge for leaving her in the woods and previously in the closet.

Despite this, Maureen does continue to win over Suzanne's affections, saying that her revenge does not mean she is not interested in her. However, Suzanne rejects Maureen and asks her to leave her alone. Whilst Desi Piscatella investigates Aydin Bayat's death, Maureen and Suzanne are kept in the same room along with the other violent inmates. Thomas Humphrey encourages Suzanne to fight Kasey Sankey, who refuses to due to Suzanne's learning disabilities. Maureen volunteers to and taunts Suzanne, which causes her to go into a frenzy and beat Maureen almost to death.

Maureen is hospitalised, and left with severe facial disfigurement. Suzanne is taken to the hospital after she tries to recreate Poussey's death and injures herself. There, the two speak and overcome their differences. In season five, Kukudio kills CO Humphrey by blowing air into his IV drip, causing him to have a stroke.

Maureen joins Suzanne when she tries to cordon off Poussey's place of death in the cafeteria. Later, when Piper Chapman and Taystee look for a way to commemorate Poussey's death, Maureen suggests the idea of dolls made from her own hair. Maureen then develops an infection and is discovered by Suzanne who tries to take them to a nurse. However, the last nurse was taken by Angie Rice and Leanne Taylor, leaving Maureen's infections. She is then forcibly removed from the prison after the riot storm, and taken to a hospital with Alex Vause whose arm was broken by Piscatella.

Maureen dies from her injuries in hospital. However, as her death is reported as anonymous, many of the inmates do not know who had died, leading Piper to panic that it was Alex who is dead.

Trivia[]

  • Whilst not confirmed, some believe that Maureen's surname is derived from the phrase "cuckoo", to refer to someone who is mentally unstable.
