I'm weaponless. Kill me! You can't, can you? You're weak like your father! I remember it. Jerec, he gave him a sweet slow death - a death worthy of a coward!
~ Maw mocking Kyle Katarn during their duel.

Maw is a major antagonist in Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II. He was once a Jedi Knight during the Galactic Republic days before meeting the former Jedi Master later Inquisitor Jerec and becoming his apprentice.

Personality[]

To the one called Maw: a bitter individual that loathes all and holds loyalty to few. A strong and formidable foe. For every cord of muscle, there is hatred. It is this hate that keeps his aging body strong.
~ Qu Rahn as a Force ghost, to Kyle Katarn on Maw's personality.

Even as a Jedi, Maw was a wild, animalistic and impatient person, but it is likely that he was still able to control his temper at that time, as he had no major problems with him on the Jedi Council. However, after joined to the dark side and Jerec, and killed his former companions, he completely released himself. He was one of the most evil and cruel Dark Jedi in the Galaxy and the Empire. Maw had an incredible hatred for the light side, he despised and condemned the Jedi and those who used the good side of the Force, seeing them as weak and pathetic. He had absolutely no empathy or remorse, he became Jerec's killing machine, an almost uncontrollable, bestial, extremely aggressive and bloodthirsty, cold-blooded killer in combat. In addition, Maw was extremely cruel, unscrupulous, depraved and rotten, capable of anything from murder to mutilation and removal of body parts and organs from Jedi corpses. The only quality that rivaled his hatred was his immeasurable sadism, perhaps even more than Boc Aseca, he enjoyed the suffering of his enemies or victims and spoke with great pleasure, for example, about Morgan's death and mutilation. He was loyal only to Jerec, but to him to the end.

Biography[]

Maw was a male Boltrunian who served the Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order as a member of the Jedi Shadows, a unique Jedi Sentinel. When the Great Jedi Purge begun, Maw was one of the many Jedi who escaped and hid from the Empire's agents. At some point he was found by Jerec another former Jedi who had become an Imperial Inquisitor. Soon Maw became Jerec's apprentice and first member of the Seven Dark Jedi. That fact made him special and unlike the other desciples of Jerec such as Yun and Boc Aseca he often took orders only by Jerec himself despite not being the second in command overall. He then aided Jerec in his quest for the Valley of the Jedi. During this quest they encountered a rebel named Morgan Katarn on the planet Sulon and upon questioning him Jerec decapitated him leaving Maw to thrust his head on a spike in the city of Barons Hed as a warning.

Later they captured a friend of Morgan Katarn and a former Jedi Master Qu Rahn who upon fighting back managed to cut Maw in half. Maw however survived and recovered thanks to his ability of Force Flight and continued to help his master in finding the Valley. They were soon approached by a new enemy, Morgan Katarn's son Kyle Katarn who was a former Imperial. Maw personally put some loyal Grave Tusken mercenaries to guard the Katarn homestead on Sulon and kill Kyle Katarn. Katarn however managed to kill them all and chase Jerec on planet Ruusan where the Valley of the Jedi was located. Maw ambushed Kyle on a docking platform and a fierce duel begun with Kyle overpowering Maw. Beaten and unarmed Maw started to mock Kyle calling him a weak coward and reminding him of his father's death in an attempt to turn him to the dark side. Enraged, Kyle killed Maw but refused to join the Dark Side.

Powers and abilities[]

Maw was the oldest and most experienced in the Force among the Seven Dark Jedi, having spent many years as a Jedi. Despite his aging body and his fatal injury at the hands of Qu Rahn he managed to survive thanks to his hatred and his mastery of the Force, managing to give Kyle Katarn a tough fight.
