Maximino "Max" Arciniega is a minor character in the AMC crime drama Breaking Bad.
He is a drug manufacturer and entrepreneur who was the co-founder of Los Pollos Hermanos restaurant chain, the other owner being Max's lover and business partner Gustavo Fring. With their restaurant chain merely serving as a front meant to launder their drug money obtained through meth distribution, the pair initially sought to work with The Cartel. However, while Gus would live to work with the Cartel in the end, Max was executed by Gus' would-be archenemy Hector Salamanca on the orders of the latter's boss Don Eladio for disrespect. Max's death provoked Gus into seeking vengeance upon the Cartel, especially Hector.
He was portrayed by James Martinez.
Biography[]
Max's past reveal that he grew up in poverty in Chile and struggled with money. However, after meeting his partner and boyfriend Gus Fring, the education of Max is provided by Gus as part of a program in order to study chemistry at "Universidad de Santiago de Chile." The duo intented to sell and distribute pure-like methamphetamine and to achieve such thing, they founded "Los Pollos Hermanos," a criminal front to launder money. The chickens in the brand logo is meant to represent each partner, one for Gus and one for Max.
As a means to extend their business, they move to Mexico and began to open various Los Pollos Hermanos restaurants and to move along the affairs with wealthier partners. At one point, they meet with Don Eladio Vuente and convince him to sell the meth through his cartel. By increasing the interest of the drug, Gus and Max handed away free samples to few select buyers, going against Eladio's orders.
Realizing their mistake, the two meet up with Eladio at his villa to forgive them for disobeying his orders. Although Max attempted to diffuse the situation by explaining to the crime lord that they only meant to expose the drug to a much larger clientele, Eladio rejects his apologies and orders Hector to kill the man just to spite Gus, who breaks down in tears following his partner's death.
Max's demise plays a huge role throughout the plot of Breaking Bad, considerably in Season 3 and onwards after the debut of Gus who wants to avenge his death by murdering the entire Juarez Cartel and torment Hector Salamanca for the pain and suffering he caused towards them. Fring even made a village in honor of his deceased boyfriend which he regularly funds and built a statue entitled "Dedicado a Max" (Spanish for "Dedicated to Max"). This shows just how close Max and Gus were to each other, as well as the fact that Max was the primary objective of Gus' vengeful campaign against Hector and the Cartel.
