Maxwell ‘Max’ Devore was an elderly and wealthy businessman, computer programmer, former resident of TR-90, the grandson to Jared Devore, the paternal grandfather to Kyra Devore and the father-in-law to Mattie Devore who has considerable influence over the town in his day.
He serves as one of the two main antagonists (alongside the ghost of Sara Tidwell) in King’s 40th novel, 'Bag of Bones". In the novel, he is a determined, stubborn and sickly man who is determined to get custody over his granddaughter, Kyra at all costs because he wants to. His son, Kyra’s father died and his daughter, Rogette assists him in his goals. He is opposed by author Mike Noonan who shares a psychic connection with his granddaughter and helps Mattie in the custody battle by getting her lawyers. As a last resort, he and Rogette meets Mike and push him in the lake. He orders Rogette to throw rocks at him in an effort to kill him but he fails as Jo’s ghost saves him.
Towards the end, realizing he was never going to have Kyra, he commit suicide by suffocating himself with a plastic bag in his bathtub. Beforehand, he ordered his henchman, George Footman to perform a drive-by shooting which successfully killed Mattie and he ordered Rogette to kidnap and kill Kyra which fails as Mike and Mattie’s ghost saves her. He appeared to Mike as a ghost as he was going to Sara’s burial ground and shows him how his grandfather murdered Sara Tidwell and her son.
